She had a long and beautiful life! Erma adored her family and supportive friends who helped guide, love and carry her through her full and happy life. Erma was born November 7, 1921 in Winnsboro, Louisiana to Eva Mathews Elkin and Orville Elkin. In 1945, she married the love of her life, Karl Henry Brauer and became an Army Air Forces wife. They raised three sons as they served their country. Erma received a bachelor's degree from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. When her husband retired from the US Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1963, they moved their family to Austin, Texas and put down roots. Erma received a Masters of Education from the University of Texas in 1968. She taught first and second grade at the Bryker Woods Elementary, Pillow Elementary and Hill Elementary Schools in Austin Independent School District for 20 years. Her family is proud to call her "The Mother of Duty Free Lunch" for which she courageously fought and won from the AISD School Board. This allowed teachers the right to a much deserved break at lunch time. She was always a leader; a take-charge lady. Erma treasured her school children. She often expressed hope that they loved being with her as much as she delighted in teaching them. After retiring from teaching, this little country girl from a small town in Louisiana became a volunteer for the Austin Heritage Society. She liked to say, "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could." Starting from humble beginnings, she never dreamed she would be privileged enough to be a docent at the Texas Governor's Mansion and meet so many dignitaries. She had a talent for retelling history with a dramatic and humorous flair. Erma was twice selected Docent of the Year at the Governor's Mansion. She also earned Docent of the Year from the Austin Heritage Society. She was noted for telling interesting stories that recreated Texas history in the classrooms of Texas elementary schools. She was a very active creative volunteer for Ballet Austin. Some of her creations were stylish center pieces, fluffy tutus and sparking "magic" wands. Erma was described by some of her friends as a collector of people and stories. She loved politics. She was a life-long learner who was well read, articulate and always in the know on current events. She always encouraged older adults who, like her, wanted to better themselves through education. Erma was always a lady, young at heart, fashionable and a shoe lover. She was vibrant and vivacious... a dear friend. She will be greatly missed. Erma's garden was her sanctuary to appreciate the glorious creations of God. She celebrated their beauty with joy. Erma's adoring family will deeply miss her loving, supportive, fun and high spirited ways. She is survived by her three sons and their families, Karl and Mary Ann, Charles and Patricia, Jim and Rose Marie; her grandchildren and their families, Jonathan and Jennifer, Nikolaus and Lauren, Katrina, Laura and Jason Hamby, Victoria and Andy Rah; her great grandchildren Grayson Hamby, Delaney Rah, Nikolaus Brauer, Kellan Hamby, Tristan Rah and Alex Brauer. Her motto was family first. The Brauer family has been truly blessed to have Erma as a mother! Heaven celebrates. Those left behind have great stories to tell. The family will receive friends from 6 PM until 8 PM on Thursday, January 22, 2015, and the funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Friday, January 23, 2015, with Pastor Jeremiah Ebeling officiating, both at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas. Interment will follow at Cook Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery at 14501 North I-35, Pflugerville, Texas.
