Helen Joyce Andrews Burns. One of her daughters said, "A mother is the heart of a home." On July 23, 2015, we lost the heart of the Burns family home. But we will forever have the memories of a life well lived and a heart shared with her family, her church and her community. Helen Burns was a southern lady whose life was characterized by smiles, laugher and a spunky spirit. She was always giving her life away as a gift to others, especially to her husband Joe, her four daughters, their families and her large and loving collection of grandchildren and great grandchildren. She and Joe were married for 71 years. Like one of the many beautiful roses from her garden, she brought color, beauty, aroma and life to everyone she knew, especially Joe. She was welcoming, warm and gracious. Her daughters remember her love of family and faith which she passed on to them. Helen was a great homemaker who kept an immaculate house. She was a wonderful cook - her daughters still use recipes that she shared. In days of good health Helen played tennis with friends, gardened and had a beautiful yard, canned and put up vegetables and fruit in the summer. She made most of their clothes growing up and taught them to crochet, embroidery and needle point. To her grandchildren, she was Gumbo, a south Louisiana word which (translated) means coffee milk in the morning, the smell of back strap venison cooking in her kitchen, endless swimming in the summer, blueberries fresh from her garden, a never ending supply of vanilla Bluebell ice cream cups from her freezer, baby sitting anytime and anywhere, kisses on your head, hugs around your neck and lots of smiles. On her last day on this earth, Helen said, "I'm ready to go…. can I get you anything?" That was Helen. Always wanting to know what she could do to serve you. Later the same day, she fell asleep and went to heaven.
