BURNSIDE Ben Patton Burnside, Jr. (Benny) was born on September 25, 1944 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He passed away at St. Francis Medical Center on March 26, 2016 after a brief illness. He was a graduate of Newellton High School and Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agri-Business. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He married Carolyn Wallace in 1967, and they established their home on Franklin Plantation in Newellton where they resided until his death. In 2016 they celebrated their forty-ninth wedding anniversary. Early in his career he was engaged in the Charolais cattle business along with farming. For the past forty years he farmed cotton, soybeans, corn, and wheat until his death. Benny devoted his life to his wife, children, grandchildren, and Franklin Plantation. He was a member of the Newellton Union Church. He served on the Board of Directors of Panola Company, Ltd. for twenty-five years, and also served as one of the original directors of Farm & Livestock Credit of Tensas Bancshares. His special interests included LSU Sports, Nascar Racing, and crossword puzzles. Benny was preceded in death by his parents, Ben Patton Burnside and Virginia Williams Burnside. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Wallace Burnside; his son, Ben Patton Burnside, III and his wife, Jennifer, of Newellton; two daughters, Dr. Virginia Burnside Coreil and her husband, Dr. Kemp Coreil, of Lafayette, and Hester Jane Burnside of West Monroe; two sisters, Helen Hester Burnside Kifer and her husband, Nathan "Sonny", of Newellton and Amanda Burnside Dean and her husband, George, of Monroe; two uncles, Frank Robinson Burnside, Sr. of Newellton, and Dr. Wade Walker Burnside of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Thomas Hays Coreil, Camille Burnside Coreil, and Catherine Virginia Coreil of Lafayette; Georgia Wells Burnside and Ella Patton Burnside of Newellton. Benny was known to family and friends as "Cap" (short for The Captain). Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood of Tallulah. Services will be at Newellton Union Church on Tuesday, March 29th with visitation beginning at 1 pm and funeral at 2 pm with the Reverends Larry Foster, Johnny Wilkins, Shawn Ostoj, and John Mabray officiating. Burial will be at Legion Memorial Cemetery immediately following the service. Nephews will serve as pallbearers: James Coates Head, Walker Burnside Head, Benjamin Bryan Dean, Frank Robinson Burnside, III, Carlton Wallace Ward, Kerry Don Meredith, Patrick Carlos Glass, and Charles Irving Tucker, Jr. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Francis Medical Center and Dr. Keith White for the compassionate care that was given to Benny during his illness.
