He impacted his community by exhibiting integrity, character, and ethics. A friend to all, Lamar loved Oak Grove and though he traveled extensively, his heart always brought him back to the place he called home. Lamar was the ultimate family man and he and his wife of 58 years, Gaye Ainsworth Bush, raised their three daughters as exemplary parents who loved their children and grandchildren. A kind and generous man, he was a genuine and committed Christian. As a teen, he and his father, Jessie Bush, bought and sold sweet potatoes to area grocery stores. When called upon, he answered the call of duty and his family is proud of his distinguished service in the United States Army. In 1955, upon discharge from the army, he began farming sweet potatoes with a one- row tractor. His first crop consisted of 35 acres of sweet potatoes. He progressed from leasing farmland to owning and operating a 1000 acre farm. In 1988, he named his operation Wistaria Farms which became the largest sweet potato operation in West Carroll Parish. In 2007, he retired after 52 years of farming. Lamar had extensive experience in producing and marketing sweet potatoes. He served a 10 year term on the Louisiana Sweet Potato Council, was a board member of the Louisiana Sweet Potato Association and was appointed by the governor to serve on the Louisiana Sweet Potato Council. Because of Lamar's innovations and abilities that changed the face of the industry, he was voted as Mr. Yam and a few years held the title of Sweet Potato King. In 1970, Lamar was instrumental in founding the Oak Grove United Pentecostal Church and served as a trustee and board member for many years. During the following decades he served in many capacities and was respected highly for his time, commitment, and love for his church and his God. Lamar was an influencer who made others around him more productive and successful in both secular and spiritual matters. While his family and friends grieve his passing, they celebrate that he fought a good fight, finished the course and kept the faith. He left a legacy that is undeniable, and reflected by those whose lives were touched and changed by crossing paths with this great man. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Benoit Bush and Katie Marthena Ewing; brother, Jack Bush; brother, J. B. Bush, Jr., and sister Maedell Barr. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Gay Ainsworth Bush of Oak Grove; daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Jerry Self of Sulphur, Louisiana; daughter and son-in-law, Mony and Rev. Mike Chance of Oak Grove, Louisiana; daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Dewey Freeman of Sulphur, Louisiana; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Loretta Bush of Ada, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Nell Bush of Oak Grove, Louisiana.
