ZERA ADDIE BYRD Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe, LA Funeral services for Mrs. Zera Byrd, 91, who resided in West Monroe at 110 Arlington Place will be held on Friday January 30, 2004 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe with Bro. Dennis Anger officiating. Interment will be at Fellowship Baptist Cemetery in Caldwell Parish. Mrs. Byrd died Tuesday night at St. Francis Hospital from complications of a stroke. She was born in Caldwell Parish on August 14, 1912 to Asa Melvin and Mary Susan Ray and has resided in West Monroe for the past fifty-four years. She was a member of Peniel Baptist Church and was the manager of the children's department at Montgomery Ward until her retirement in 1974. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years James Byrd and an infant daughter; two brothers Jack Ray Sr. and Pat Ray; two sisters, Ora Batson and Audie Mann. She is survived by four children: Charles Byrd and wife Carolyn of West Monroe; Dee Owens and husband Mack of Dallas, Texas; Richard Byrd and wife Brenda of West Monroe; Gerald Byrd and wife Janis of West Monroe; one sister, Martha Lorene Messina and husband Anthony of Monroe; one brother Asa Ray and wife Opal of Monroe; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. A woman of courage, strength, and gentleness of spirit, she will be remembered for her devotion to and love for family and friends. She was a true example of self-sacrifice, generosity, and faithfulness to all who knew her. Pallbearers will be grandsons Charles Byrd Jr., Louis Byrd, Sr., Louis Byrd Jr., Philip Byrd, Mark Owens, Lensey Owens, James Byrd, and Casey Byrd. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Thursday, January 29, 2004 at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe.
