Richard worked most of his life as a carpenter, taking immense joy from building things… the right way. He was strong, faithful and unwavering, the pillar of his family. His son Adam said, "There is only one man in the world that I will admit is tougher than me, that's my dad and he proves it every day. I love him with all I've got. I hope someday I might be half the man that he is." He loved to make people think, to challenge their worldview. But his greatest testimony came in the final days of his life. With hands that trembled, barely able to lift glasses to his face, Richard asked his family to be quiet and not hover. He wanted to read. Read the Bible that he clutched while waiting for our ever faithful God to call him home. "Rejoice, don't cry, heaven is beautiful," he said. "They are waiting on me." And at the very moment he left this earth, he joined in that blessed reunion with those that preceded him, his parents Betty and Earl Calhoun, Maternal grandparents Jean and Lucille Gilbert, Paternal grandparents Make and Jewel Calhoun. He is survived by his wife of 28 years Cindy DeMoss Calhoun, daughter Stacy Calhoun Anders and husband Chester Anders, son Adam Richard Calhoun, one grandson William Garrett Anders, 2 brothers Mike Calhoun and Ken Calhoun and wife Lisa, one sister Glenda "Sissy" Calhoun, 16 nieces and nephews, uncountable aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Visitation will be held Sunday July 29th from 5:00 PM-8:00 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe. Funeral services will be Monday at 2:00 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe. Interment to follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of West Monroe. First cousins will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Gideon's International.
