J. CALHOUN Cox Funeral Home Delhi , LA Funeral services for F. J. Calhoun, known to his many friends as "Cal", will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Delhi, LA with his son-in-law, Bro. Raymond Lovelady officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 PM until-8:00 PM at Cox Funeral Home. Burial will be in Faith Memorial Park cemetery in Delhi. He passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at St. Francis North Hospital in Monroe due to complications from pneumonia. Cal was born on December 31, 1916 on his parent's farm near Bearden, Oklahoma. He was the third of five boys, to Levi and Mary Calhoun. Cal was captain of the Oklahoma State Championship High School basketball team. After graduation he helped run his family's farm for several years. He left home in 1938 during the Great Depression to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps, known as the CCC. He was assigned to Colorado where he ran a bulldozer, helping construct new roads accessing Dinosaur State Park. In 1939 he married his wife Beth to whom he stayed married to for the next 67 years. Together they moved to Vidalia, Illinois where he started a career building and working on pipelines. He continued in this field until 1964 when they moved to Delhi to work for Mid-Valley Pipeline as a station foreman, retiring in 1984. He and Beth built a home and continued to call Delhi home until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beth, his daughter Sherril and his four brothers, Simon, Jim, Dale and Everett. Survivors include his children: Karen Calhoun, Marylyn Lovelady and her husband Ray, Roger Calhoun and wife Vicki and Keith Calhoun and wife Gail. His grandchildren include Sheri Miller and husband Sean, Damin Calhoun and wife Abbie, Elizabeth Hensley and husband Bobby and Cody Calhoun. Great grandchildren are Jessica Jackson, Josh Crawford, Carson Hensley and Hailey Calhoun along with two great great grandchildren McKenzie Crawford and Dominic Jackson. The family would like to thank their dear friend Bobbi Bassett for making it possible for our dad to live the last two years of his life with dignity and independence, as well as the nursing and medical staff at St. Francis North for their heartfelt care in the last days of his life.
