"SHORTY" CATHEY Edmonds Funeral Home Jonesboro, LA Services celebrating the life of Laris D. "Shorty" Cathey, 85 will be held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, August 30, 2009, at Hodge Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Norris Curry and Rev. Perry Lassiter. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Jonesboro, LA. Visitation with the family will be held at Edmonds Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 29, 2009. Born November 13, 1923, to Emma Kelly and Herman D. Cathey, Laris was one of nine children. As a child, he and his family moved to Hodge, LA. where he lived for the remainder of his life. During WWII, Laris served as a soldier for the U.S. Army in the campaigns of the Pacific Theater. He worked 30 years for Continental Can Company until his retirement in 1978. Throughout his life, Laris was an avid gardener, golfer and sportsman. He enjoyed drinking coffee and sharing life stories with everyone he met. His patience and gentle nature gladdened the lives of those who knew him, especially his many grandchildren he cherished so dearly. Laris passed away on August 25, 2009, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, LA., surrounded by friends and family. Laris is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Era; sisters, Eva Dell Baerwitz, Mary Fern Winter, Tina Womack and Phyllis Lowell; children, Ann Martin, Terri Cathey, Laris D. Cathey, Jr., and Kristy Salter; grandchildren, Debra Bailey, Lori Strickland, Kelly Ray, Jill Cameron, Rob Harrell, Jeremy Cathey, Jessica Pixley, Casey Cathey and Mary Beth Salter; great- grandchildren, Katie White, John David Fife, Will Whitehead, Erin Cameron, Elizabeth Ray, Alysa Cathey, Sarah Kate Cathey, Austin Harrell, Jonathan Ray, Ramsay Cathey, Scottlynn Cathey, Halle Harrell and Larkin Cathey; great-great grandchildren, Joseph Reed and Abigail White. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and his great-grandson, Daniel Fife. Pallbearers for the service will be the Deacons of Hodge Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers include John T. Salter, Garland Walsworth, Billy Harper, Frank "Red" Stewart and Dean Robinson. Laris was the perfect example of a true country man who found joy in living a simple life. He will be deeply missed.
