He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cindy Thomas Cheatham of West Monroe; son, Shane Cheatham and wife Melanie of West Monroe, and daughter, Sherri Cheatham Burrows and husband Jay, of Katy, Texas. He is also survived by four grandsons; Jonathon Ward, Jim Cheatham, Brian Burrows, and Blake Burrows. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Cheatham and Gerry Cheatham Heard. Mike was born on December 9, 1943, in Houston, Texas. As a child, Mike's family resided in Eagle Lake, Texas, where he lived across the street from his childhood sweetheart, Cindy. The two married on June 8, 1963 and attended college together at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA followed by Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. There they met four special couples who became their forever friends. Mike and Cindy raised their two children and built a life time of memories with their family and friends, both in Eagle Lake and West Monroe. Over the span of his life, Mike worked as a rice farmer, a construction superintendent and developer, a hunting guide, and as the owner of "Mike's Barbeque" in West Monroe. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and grilling. He loved being "Pawpaw" to his grandsons and watching them participating in sports. He was known for his amazing barbeque and his secret barbeque sauce. Visitation for Louisiana friends and family will be held at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe on Thursday, December 10th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Honoring his request, Mike will then be taken home to Eagle Lake, Texas to be laid to rest. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 13, at 2:00 p.m. at Eagle Lake Funeral Home of Eagle Lake, with graveside services to follow at Lakeside Cemetery. All are welcomed to attend and celebrate Mike's life. Friends and family will be welcomed following the service in Eagle Lake at the home of Linda and Steve Balas. The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to Hospice Family Alliance, especially his caretakers, Dona and Trish, for the wonderful care provided. Memorials may be made in his honor to the American Cancer Society or to Camp Journey of Katy, Texas, a camp program for children and young adults with autism, at www.camp-journey.com.
