Born on a farm near Mangham, LA on August 23, 1924, he was the youngest of 8 children. During World War II, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps and served in the Philippines and Japan. After the war, he was employed by Massony & Altick Cotton Merchants in Winnsboro. In 1950, he married the love of his life, Juanita McGough, who would be his partner for the next 56 years. In 1960, he established Cheek Cotton Co. in Lake Providence, where he served on the Bank of Dixie's board of directors, as president of Briarfield Academy's board of directors, and as a deacon in the First Baptist Church. In 1979, he purchased Pine Hills Golf & Country Club near Calhoun. He owned and operated both Pine Hills and Riverside Country Club in West Monroe until retirement in 1998. For many years, he enjoyed playing golf and entertaining guests at his home in Branson, MO. In recent years, he resided part-time with his son and grandchildren at their home in Goshen, CT. He was preceded in death by parents Ben and Rozella Kline Cheek; a baby brother who died in infancy; brothers Gerald, Cecil, and Leo Cheek; and sisters Minnie Evans, Tempie Evans, and Nobie Gaspard. Steve is survived by his son, Steve Cheek, and his three grandchildren Lexy, Nick and Sam Ocean Cheek. Visitation will be held at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe on Sunday, May 21, 2017 from noon until 2:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Gwin Cemetery in Mangham, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of West Monroe.
