LEROY COATES

Funeral services for Mr. LeRoy Coates, age 90, will be held at 11:00 am Monday, 
July 17, 2017 at the Springhill United Methodist Church, Springhill, LA with 
Rev. Bill McLain officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 pm in the 
Roselawn Memorial Garden Cemetery, Calhoun, LA, under the direction of Bailey 
Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home, 
Springhill, LA.

Mr. Coates was born on December 10, 1926 to Lonnie Lee and Rosemary McDaniel 
Coates in Olla, LA and passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2017 in Springhill, 
LA. He went to war at the age of 17, in April 1944, and served in the South 
Pacific as a radio/radar man on a sub-chaser in the U.S. Navy. After returning 
to the U. S., Mr. Coates went to work for Selig Manufacturing Company where he 
learned the furniture building business from the ground up. He retired as 
Assistant Plant Manager from Selig after 43 years.

After retirement, Mr. Coates worked with his wife, Velma, in Coates Upholstery 
in Monroe, LA and then in Homer, LA. He was a devoted son, husband and father 
raising all his children as christians in Highland Baptist Church, Monroe, LA 
where he also served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon, until relocating to 
Homer, LA. Mr. Coates married Jean Gray Pippin and has spent the last 20 years 
happily married and enjoying life with Jean. They were daily customers of the 
local McDonald's and loved to dance any chance they got.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Gray Pippen Coates of Springhill, LA; his 
children Phillis Massone Jones and husband, Bobby of Homer, LA; Christopher 
Allen Coates and wife, Charlotte of Downsville, LA; David Lee Coates and wife, 
Kay of College Grove, TN; Sandra Coates Griggs and husband, Buddy of Homer, LA; 
grandchildren, Monty Dean Lenard, Christy Lenard Bekhit, Penny Lenard Ferguson, 
David Scott Lines, Kimberly Lines Landers, Julie Christine Coates, Paige 
Marshall Tabor, Corey Daren Marshall, David Lee Coates, Jr., Jason Christy, 
Andrew "Drew" Griggs and Miriam Griggs; numerous great-grandchildren and great 
great-grandchildren; brother, Garland Coates of Raleigh, NC.

Mr. Coates was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 40 years and 
mother of his children, Velma Weeks Massone Coates in 1986; daughter, Linda 
Coates Herford; grandson, James "Jamie" Robert Coates; four brothers and one 
sister.

Pallbearers will be members of the Ed Schultz Sunday School Class.
