Irma was born in Weston, Louisiana on July 1, 1920, the youngest child of Philip V. and Minnie S. Boyd. Always energetic, Irma excelled at practically everything. She graduated with honors from Weston High School in 1936 and received a full academic scholarship to Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, now La. Tech University. "Miss Irma", as she became known in her later years was an educator whose career spanned the years 1939 - 1975. She started teaching at Gilbert High School in Gilbert, Louisiana at the age of nineteen. After a hiatus to get married and start her family, in 1945 Miss Irma found herself at Hodge Elementary in Hodge, Louisiana. From there she took a position teaching eighth grade language arts at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, where she taught from 1950 until 1962. She then taught four years at Southside Elementary from 1962 until 1966, all the while furthering her graduate studies at La. Tech. From 1966 - 1973 Miss Irma served the Jackson Parish Schools as Title I Reading Supervisor. She then moved into the Elementary Supervisor position and during the 1974-1975 school year she was Principal of Southside Elementary in Jonesboro. At the time of her retirement in 1975, Miss Irma held B.A., M.A., and Specialist in Education degrees from La. Tech University. After retiring, Miss Irma continued her community activities. She was a member of the Jonesboro Study Guild, the Zion's Rest Primitive Baptist Church, the Heritage Quilt Guild and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. A cancer survivor, she became a leader in the Jackson Parish chapter of the American Cancer Society . In 1985, Miss Irma was honored to be selected at the Jackson Parish Lady of the Year, a highlight of her life. In 1940, Miss Irma married the love of her life, Lester G. Colvin of Jonesboro. They lived in Jonesboro, Louisiana until moving to Shreveport, Louisiana in 2000. After Lester's death in 2000, Miss Irma plunged right into community activities in Shreveport. She joined a health club to continue her water exercise, joined Red River Quilters, joined Temple Primitive Baptist Church and continued making daily walks as well as tutoring a child with reading difficulties. She remained active in the American Cancer Society and filled her days with spreading her unique sunshine until a stroke slowed her down in 2006. During her life, Miss Irma enjoyed sewing, traveling, reading, baking, gardening, canning, emailing with her friends and generally being in the thick of things. Above all, she loved people and never met a stranger. She cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren first and foremost; but she dearly loved and was kind to virtually everyone she met. Friends were the treasures in her life and she was blessed with many. Mrs. Colvin was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Lester G. Colvin, her parents, four sisters and one brother. She is survived by son Keith G. Colvin and wife Alice of Lynn Haven, Florida; daughter Vicki C. Warner and fiance' Donnie Arnold of Shreveport, Louisiana; two grandsons, Philip A. Colvin and wife Andrea of Lynn Haven, Florida and Scott Colvin and Cameron Colvin of Lynn Haven, Florida; four great grandsons, Chase Sapp, Calan Sapp, Chandler Colvin and Cameron Colvin all of Lynn Haven, Florida, several cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews as well as a host of friends. Special thanks go out to Miss Irma's loving caregivers, Patricia Dickerson, Allison Willis, Arnetta Clark, Martina Hawthorne, Yolanda Boyd and Phyllis Ford who took care of her with tenderness and love for nine years. Words are inadequate to express the family's appreciation of these special angels. The family also recognizes with appreciation the nurses and staff of Hill Cross Hospice and Colonial Oaks Guest Care Center. Services will be held at Southern Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Louisiana on Saturday, September 19, 2015. Public visitation will be held Saturday at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Southern Funeral Home with Elder Troy Phillips and Brother Benny Miers officiating.
