She was born December 4, 1931 to Paul and Effie McKenzie, near Abbeville, LA, but lived most of her life in Monroe. Carla graduated Class of '48 from Ouachita Parish High School, and then earned a BA in Education/Library Science from ULM in 1954. Carla was married to Louis R. Soulier from 1951 through 1975. Carla and Jimmye L. Conerly were married from 1982 until his death in Dec. 2008. Carla was employed as a film/media librarian at ULM from 1954-1978; and then as a staff-member of the Financial Aid Dept. at ULM from 1978-1980. She later worked as office manager for Dr. Warren J. Stassi of Monroe from 1980-1983. Her last employment was with the Orthopaedic Clinic of Monroe from 1984-1993. She was an active, outgoing person who loved life and people. A volunteer at both the Ouachita Council on Aging and the West Ouachita Senior Center, she participated regularly with the LifeLiners line dance troupe, as well as the Broadway Wannabe's acting group. She was a patron member of Strauss Playhouse of Monroe since 1963, and actively supported the Arts. Carla belonged to both the Quarter Century Club as well as the Golden Society at ULM. She was an active member of the American Legion. She also attended the Rays of Sonshine mission church in Monroe, and was well-loved by its members. Carla is survived by her only child, Paris Soulier and his wife Lela of Monroe; sister Maxine Roane of Arlington, TX; step-son Marc Conerly and his wife Ricki of West Monroe; nephews Herschel and John Paul Roane, great-niece Auburn Roane, granddaughter Shaina Conerly, and great-grandson Aden Conerly. A memorial service will be held for Carla Conerly Saturday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Ouachita Council on Aging at. 2407 Ferrand St. in Monroe. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Carla's name to the Rays of Sonshine in Monroe.
