Funeral services will be Saturday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 9:30 am until time for the service, both at First United Methodist Church, 3900 Loop Road, Monroe, the Rev. Will Sheffield officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Mulhearn Funeral Home, 2308 Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA 71203 with burial in Mulhearn Memorial Park. Born July 23, 1922, in Cedar Grove, LA to the Rev.& Mrs. H. L. Johns (nee Persis Means), Persis grew up in Methodist parsonages throughout the state and was educated in public schools in New Orleans, Ruston, Monroe and Lake Charles. Evidencing musical aptitude in early childhood, she began piano studies in the New Orleans Conservatory of Music. Other teachers included Florence Zeigler Albritton of Monroe and Kathleen Blair Foster, Lake Charles. A 1939 graduate of Lake Charles High, Persis was in the first graduating class of John McNeese Junior College in 1941. At LSU-Baton Rouge she studied under Prof. Christian Jordan, served as co-ed representative on the Honor Court, was a member of Delta Omicron music fraternity and received her B.A. in Music in 1944. Postgraduate study at Swarthmore Business College in Pennsylvania awarded her a secretarial degree. As a longtime New Orleans resident, Persis served as pianist and organist at Lakeview Presbyterian and Munholland Methodist churches; accompanied choral groups; and often performed as guest soloist at area musical events. Employment included positions with WWL Radio, John Hancock Insurance and Munholland Methodist Church. After moving to Monroe in 1967 she was on the staff of Northeast LA State University and taught music appreciation classes at First Methodist Preschool. In 1969 she married J.C. Crawford and became active in First Baptist and Parkview Baptist Churches, especially contributing to their music ministries. She was a member of the Musical Coterie, PEO Chapter AE, the Camellia Club and the Fine Arts Club. She taught private piano lessons and often performed as guest pianist and accompanist to other musicians and choral groups. Persis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, J.C. Crawford, and step-son, James William (Jim) Crawford. She is survived by three daughters, Joy Barber Bernard of Independence, LA; Gail Barber Rugg and her husband, John, of Canton TX; and Linda Barber Auld of New Orleans LA; 6 grandchildren: Chris Bernard, Independence LA; M.D. Bernard, Holden LA; Robert Shepherd, New Orleans; Wendy Rugg Beebe, Highlands Ranch CO; Neil Rugg, Canton TX; Daniel Rugg, Little Elm TX; and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry LeRoy "Roy" Johns, Jr. and wife, Clarice, of Monroe, and a sister, Hope Johns Norman and husband, Tom, of Alexandria. Persis also treasured association with a step-daughter, Carol Ann Crawford Guilbert of Dallas TX; step-grandchildren, Dr. Harry Boyd of Winnsboro LA, Catherine Crawford Palmer of Richardson TX, Keith Boyd of Farmerville LA, Jim Crawford of Pensacola FL, Mark Guilbert of N. Richland Hills TX, Ben Boyd of Kansas City MO, Stephanie Guilbert Stanley and John Guilbert of Dallas TX; and great-grandchildren.
