Frank Bass officiating. Interment will follow at Heard Cemetery, Manifest, LA under the direction of Young's Funeral Home. Shelby Creel was born on June 2, 1928 in Manifest, LA and passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Valley View Health Care in Marksville after fighting a couragous battle with cancer. He was a resident of Monroe, retired from the US Postal Service after 27 years of service and a member of First Baptist Church of Swartz. Mr Creel was born and raised on a small farm in Manifest, LA, where his family worked hard raising cattle, hogs and farming. They enjoyed the quiet life of country living. He accepted Christ at the age of 12 at Pisgah Baptist Church and was Baptised in Bushley Creek. He attended School at Manifest and Harrisonburg High School. After his service in the US Army he attended Northeast LA State College (ULM Monroe). Mr Creel served his Country during the Korean War in the United States Army. He enlisted in the army October of 1949 and took basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was assigned to the 19th Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in the Far East Command, located on the Island of Kyushu, Japan in March 1950. When the war broke he was sent to South Korea on July 4,1950 and was reported missing July 16,1950 at Hun-Ni, Korea, north of Taejon. There was no word heard from him until the Communist released a prisoner of war list on Dec. 18,1951. The family received a letter he had written Dec.27,1951 and got several after that. He was released August 25,1953. After his release in 1953 he met and married the love of his life, Erma Davis Creel. He was preceded in death by: Father-William Gilbert Creel, Mother-Martha Massey Creel, Brother-Charley Shirley Creel. Survivors include: His Wife of 58 years, Erma Davis Creel of Monroe, La; Daughter- Jan Creel Newcomer and her husband Bruce of Greenbrier, AR Son-Shelby Creel, Jr.and his wife Peggy of McKinney, TX Daughter-Rebecca Creel Novo and her husband Bruce of Mansura, LA Sister-Hannah Creel Steele of McDonough, GA Granddaughter-Jessica Creel LaPrade and her husband Ross of Allen, TX.; Grandson- Dustin Ross and his wife Hilary of Monroe, LA.; Grandson- Tyler Creel of McKinney, TX.; Grandson- Bret Novo and his wife Victoria of Jonesboro, AR Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be Herman Naville, Trigger Ewing, Scotty Wright and all Tiger Survivors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chennault Aviation and Military Museum, 701 Kansas Lane, Monroe LA 71203. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends to whom he was devoted.
