Friday, April 17, 2015 at First United Methodist Church, Monroe, LA, with visitation at 1:00 P.M. Reverend Lynn Malone and Henry Cumpton will officiate. Mittie was born August 21, 1926, at Vicksburg, MS, to James Byron and Lillie Sapp Roby and died Sunday, February 15, 2015. A native of Cotton Valley, LA, she attended Cotton Valley schools, graduating as valedictorian. She went on to LSU, where she was active in Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Chi Omega, Wesley Foundation, and University Methodist Church. Mittie was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School, working with United Methodist Women, and serving on administrative boards. She was also a Girl Scout troop leader for several years. After the end of her first marriage to Lamont Thomas, she later married Ferrand Cumpton of Rayville. Mr. & Mrs. Cumpton enjoyed many years of house boating on the Ouachita River and other Louisiana waterways during their 23 years of marriage. Ferrand preceded Mittie in death in 1999. Others who preceded her in death are her parents, James Byron and Lillie Roby, and her stepson, Burgess Cumpton. She is survived by daughters, Beth Thompson of Monroe and Emily Van Orden of Gonzales; stepson, Ferrand Lee Cumpton of Nashville, TN; step daughter-in-law, Alice Cumpton of Rayville; grandchildren, Keely Babin of Gonzales, Mark Nelson and wife Melonie of Monroe, Carl Van Orden and wife Erica of St. Amant, Leo Cumpton and wife Shauna of Rayville, Melissa Morris and husband Jason of Rayville; 12 great grandchildren, and many friends whom she loved deeply. Mittie, appreciating the certainty of death, donated her body to LSU School of Medicine that others might benefit from research.
