James Edward Downs will be 10:00am Friday, October 24, 2014 at Luna Assembly of God with Rev. Kelvin Clark, Rev. Louis Bartett, Rev. Eugene Brown, and Rev. Joel Brackett officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home West Monroe. Visitation will be from 5pm until 8pm Thursday, October 23, 2014 at the church. Rev. Downs was born on January 7, 1926 in Luna, LA and passed from this life on October 21, 2014 in West Monroe at the age of 88. He was a resident of West Monroe and worked at the local paper mill 25 years. He was an ordained Assemblies of God minister and for more than 50 years pastored churches in the state, including pioneering a church in LaFitte, LA. He was a decorated WWII Army infantry veteran who served in major battles. He was the beloved husband of Bobbie for 68 years, the admired father of seven daughters, a hero in every way, always bringing out the best in those who loved and cared for him. He was admired for his wit and good sense of humor. Most notable is the integrity of Rev. Downs; he served diligently in every place the Lord called him to work, and without complaint. For the last two years, he was cared for at West Monroe Guest House by the faculty and staff who grew to love and respect him well. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin B. & Elenor Taylor Downs; two daughters, Patricia Lynn Smith & Joanie Stafford; two grandsons, Gregory Hattaway & Myles Hill; three sisters, and three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Ruth Finley Downs; five daughters, Dianne Hattaway & husband Hayward, Bobbie Joyce Foster & husband Ted, Kathy Hill & husband Martin, Peggy Dunn & husband John, and Frances Kaye South; one son- in-law, James C. Smith; four brothers, Marvin Downs, Lonnie Downs, Alton Downs, and Thomas Downs; one sister, Mary Magdalene Frost; 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Tyler Hattaway, Zach Foster, Chris Hill, Devin Smith, David Dunn and Richard Stafford. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons Conner Creech & Josh Juneau and dear friend, Erik Crain.
