Visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. with Memorial Service to follow on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Center Point Baptist Church, 608 Winnfield Rd, West Monroe. The service will be conducted by Brother William Edwards and Rev. Danny McIlveene. John served his country with pride in the Air Force (1955-1966), in the National Guard (1974-1975), and in the Air Force Reserve (1984-1992). Except for his military service time, John lived and worked in the Choudrant, Monroe, and West Monroe area all his life. He retired from the Post Office in 1992, after 36 years of civil service. Throughout his lifetime, John enjoyed many activities, racing cars, motorcycles, go-carts, ultra light flying, radio control planes, playing pool, water skiing, building boats, playing practical jokes, card games, and was a good dancer. He loved animals, and had dogs most of his life and even flying squirrels. John always had an on-going project and was always eager to assist family and friends. Never at a loss for words, his spontaneous humor and wit will be greatly missed. Mr. Dye was a Christian who celebrated his love for God as a member of Center Point Baptist Church. He was a blood donor earlier in his life and had decided in 2004 to donate his body to Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport for research and learning. He also donated his corneas in hope that others may see. Mr. Dye is preceded in death by his father, Emmett G. Dye; his mother, Mable Marie Reames Dye Denton; and his stepfather, Ray Denton. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl who was his best friend, caregiver, and helpmate; his sons, John Lee, Robbie and wife Robyn, and Donnie; his beloved pets, Sport and Taz; his brother, Eddie Ray Dye and wife Glenda; sister, Glenda Smith and husband Gary; sister, Sheila Spangler and husband Loyd; granddaughter, Destiny Black; grandson, Jacob Dye; daughter, Kim Gresham and husband Roy; granddaughters, Sunni and Jordan; daughters, Kathryn and Michelle Hollis; granddaughter, Brittany Glascock; and grandson, Brayden Wesley Hollis. John and his family want to express their heartfelt thanks for the care and tenderness provided to him by exceptional people whose loving care extended his life and family joy much longer than expected, Dr. Barry Weinberger, Lisa "Baby" Johnson, and all the nursing staff of Oncology Associates, Radiation Department of the Northeast Louisiana Cancer Center at Glenwood Hospital and Dr. Marshall and Wendy and the other caring staff too numerous to mention. Thank you for your gift to us. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Walthall, Jarvin Albritton, Kevin Albritton, Dave Kent, James Traylor, Ray Traylor, and Jimmy Chandler. Special thanks to all the employees of The Kitchen Café and board members of the round table. John's final wishes were for his family and friends to come together and joyfully celebrate his life. "Smile for me and share a fond memory for I leave this world with a clear mind and spirit to be with my Heavenly Father." In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Center Point Baptist Church, 608 Winnfield Rd, West Monroe, LA 71292.
