JR. EMFINGER Memorial services for Elmer N. Emfinger, Jr., 86, of Gilbert will be held on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church in Gilbert, under the direction of Gill First National Funeral Home of Winnsboro. Rev. Bobby Ensminger and Rev. Jimmy Harper will officiate the 2 p.m. service. Interment will follow at Oakley Cemetery with Masonic rites and military honors. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, March 13, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Elmer was born July 16, 1927 in Gilbert, and passed away on March 11, 2014. He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, and Past Master Mason of the Dan Gilbert Lodge, as well as a former alderman for the Village of Gilbert. As a young man during World War II, Elmer enlisted in the United States Navy when he was 17 years old in 1944, and saw action in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Tennessee. Upon his discharge in 1946, Elmer returned to Gilbert and married his sweetheart, Anna Belle Curry, and it was in Gilbert that they shared 68 years of love and a steady bond while raising their children. Elmer worked as a painting contractor throughout north Louisiana for well over 40 years before retiring, and remained a proud Navy veteran in the truest sense of those known as the "Greatest Generation." Those who knew Elmer knew him to be a kindhearted and hard-working man of integrity and strong faith. He was fortunate to have many friends, and will be remembered by his friends and family as a deeply loving and generous man with an ever-present twinkle in his eye and an engaging sense of humor. He loved growing and sharing tomatoes; hunting - especially deer; the Saints and LSU; picking flowers for his wife, the love of his life; and the beauty of a full moon in a clear night sky. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and praising God who blessed his life with beauty and love. Elmer is welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Emfinger of Gilbert, and an infant sister, Sharon Emfinger. Elmer is survived by his wife of 67 years, Anna Belle, and four children: Sherry Mahaffey and husband Eric of Monroe; Lindy Price and husband Paul of Chase; Mike Emfinger and wife Karen of Crowville, and Carole Franklin and husband Roy of Rayville. He is also survived by his brother, Bobby, and wife Jeanette of Gilbert. "Grandpa" is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Pallbearers will be Chris Lewis, Mark Mahaffey, Michael Mahaffey, Colton Franklin, Trey Price, Sean Christian, Mark Guerriero, and Robert Stewart. Honorary pallbearers are Roy McManus, R.V. Arnold, and the deacons of Calvary Baptist Church.
