She was born in 1921 to Earnest Theodore Smith and Pina Temperance Johnson Smith on a large farm near Gower, Missouri. The farmhouse was scarred by bullets from a Civil War skirmish, and farm work was done using horses and mules. They had no indoor plumbing or electricity. She attended the State Teachers College in Maryville, Missouri and later received a Masters degree in Home Economics at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. In 1943, she married Bruce Ward Everist, Jr. She worked as a teacher in New Orleans to put her husband through medical school, later she taught at Louisiana Tech and was a dietician there for many years until she retired at age 79. She died with memories of the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the 59 cent button. She had many interests; current events, horse showing, cooking and sewing. She is preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, and her nine siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters Anne Everist Gleim and her husband Jerome Howard Gleim of Gold Canyon, AZ, Jane Everist Faulk and her husband Reynolds Trippett Faulk, III of Monroe, LA; granddaughters, Megan Anne Faulk Rugg and husband Benjamin Ray Rugg of Maumelle, AR, Laura Jane Faulk of Baton Rouge, LA, Carol Hayes Faulk and Julie Irene Faulk of Monroe, A. The family will gather to celebrate her life with a memorial service in Ruston in December. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to DART (Domestic Abuse Resistance Team of Lincoln Parish), 108 W. Alabama Ave., Ruston, LA 71270.
