FALLIN Daniel W. Fallin died peacefully in his sleep during the early morning hours of November 28, 2014. He was 101 years old. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, with Rev. Larry Emory officiating the service. Burial following at Longstraw Memorial Cemetery in Choudrant. Visitation will be prior to the service at 1:00 PM until service time. Dan Fallin was born Jan. 23 1913 to parents B.L. Fallin and Ollie Jane Smith Fallin. Dan married Merline Chandler Jan .11, 1940. They had one son, Alton Fallin, born Sept. 15, 1944. Dan was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, 3 sisters and 1 brother; Mary Lee Chandler of Ruston, Earline Webster of Orange, TX, Alice Garner of Ruston, and Ford Fallin of Alexandria. Survivors are his son Alton Fallin & wife Sylvia, step-grandchildren Carole Roth & husband Mark and Robert Hutchins, step-granddaughter Chelsea Elgin & husband Andrew, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Dan was in the Army during World War II where he served from 1942 to 1945 in a Medical Battalion of the 7th Armored Division of General George Patton's 3rd Army. He entered France from Normandy shortly after D-Day and was with the 3rd Army where they spearheaded the XX Corps drive from Chartres to Metz. On the 30th of September 1944,the 7thArmored division was assigned to the 1st Army to join the bitter fighting in Holland. They were given the task of defending the right flank of the British- Canadian drive through Holland. Later the Division was assigned to VIII U.S. Corps and ordered to March 50 miles to St. Vith in Belgium where they encountered very heavy resistance during what is known as the Battle of the Bulge. The 7th crossed the Rhine at Remagen where they became part of the III Corps as they attacked out of the Remagen Bridgehead. The offensive drive lasted 22 days with very heavy fighting. The route of the 7th from the Normandy beaches to the Baltic sea was 2,260 miles, four campaigns and over 113,000 prisoners taken. After his military service, Dan attended Trade School in Winnfield, LA, where he graduated as an electrician in 1946. He joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and remained a member for over 65 years. He worked in the Ruston - Monroe area until he retired in 1980 after 34 years as an electrician. The 7th Armored Division started having annual reunions in the early 50's and Dan attended almost every one until the last couple of years when his health didn't allow long distance travelling. The men of the "Lucky 7th" had a very close bond. After retirement, Dan participated in various activities at Council on Aging, AARP, and Senior Circle events. He also served as Post Commander of Ruston VFW Post 3615. Dan was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for many years, but in November 2009 became a member of Longstraw Baptist Church in Choudrant where his son and daughter-in-law attend. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the dedicated staffs of The Arbor & Terrace of Ruston and Premiere Hospice of Arcadia who cared for him over the last few years and the final days of his life.
