All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** SHREVEPORT, LA - Frances Vivian Flanders, formerly of Monroe, Louisiana, died Friday afternoon, November 7, 2003, at Live Oak Retirement Community in Shreveport, LA. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Mansfield, LA with Dr. William T. Crosby officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Mansfield, LA. Visitation will be Sunday November 9, 2003 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Miss Flanders was born on September 18, 1908, the daughter of Frank and Vivian (Fair) Flanders of Mansfield, LA. She attended Mansfield Female College and graduated from Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, LA where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She received a graduate degree in Library Science from LSU-Baton Rouge and soon thereafter became one of the state's first certified librarians. She was the Ouachita Parish librarian from 1946 until her retirement in 1973. Among her many professional achievements was the honor of receiving the Essae M. Culver Award, the highest award given by the Louisiana Library Association for distinguished library service. As a former teacher she was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary education organization. A well-known genealogist, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Colonial Wars, National Society of the Daughters of Founders and Patriots, and Colonial Dames, and held offices in these organizations on the local, state, and national levels. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Monroe and was the first woman elected to the Board of Deacons. The church's library is named on her honor. Miss Flanders is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Doris Flanders of Mansfield, LA; one sister, Minnie Merle Douglas of Columbia, South Carolina; nephews: Alfred Flanders of Mansfield, LA, Samuel Douglas of Columbia, South Carolina, and Frank Douglas of Houston, TX. In addition she is survived by four great-nieces, three great nephews, three great-great nieces, and two great-great nephews.
