GARFIELD Funeral services for Leon H. Garfield, 95, of Kankakee, IL, formerly of Monroe, will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, April 7, 2014 at Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, with Dr. Tim Neustifter officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, under direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Mr. Garfield died Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at his residence in Kankakee, IL. He attended Lanier High School in Macon, GA. and graduated in 1936, then attended Mercer University in Macon, GA and graduated from Law school in 1941 with LLB degree in law. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and was president of the fraternity in 1941. In April 1942 he joined the U.S. Army infantry and served in the U.S., North Africa, and Italy. Mr. Garfield participated in North African and Italian campaigns as Company Commander, eventually attaining the rank of Major. He continued his education and attended Wharton School of Finance and Commerce where he graduated with a Master of Business Administration in 1947. In June of 1946 he married Catherine Page of Lyons, GA. He worked in the folding carton industry all his life, starting in Greensboro, NC, with Container Corporation of America. Mr. Garfield lived in Greensboro, NC; Park Forest, IL; Pacific, MO; Kankakee, IL; Dallas, TX; and Monroe, LA. He retired in 1978 from Olinkraft, Inc., as Vice- President of the Folding Carton Division, living in Kankakee, IL. After retiring from Olinkraft, he moved to Dallas, TX, and retired from Simkins Industries in 1987, then moved back to Monroe where he became active in St. Paul's United Methodist Church. At St. Paul's, Mr. Garfield was active as the Director of the Stewardship Campaign, Co-Chairman of the Church Utilization Committee, Co-Chairman of the Building Committee for Church Utilization, and a Member of the Nominating Committee. Mr. Garfield was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Page Garfield. Survivors include three sons; Bill Garfield, of Fair Oaks, CA, Bob Garfield, of Oklahoma City, OK, and Ed Garfield, of Bourbonnais, IL; three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Visitation will be 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Noon Monday, April 7, 2014 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Louisiana Methodist Children's Home, 904 Deville Lane, Ruston, LA.
