GARRIS Edmonds Funeral Home, Jonesboro, LA. Ishmael Smith (I.S.) Garris, age 81, of Ruston, Louisiana, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2010, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Garris was born November 27, 1928 in Spearsville, Louisiana and was the oldest son of the late Thelma Smith Garris and Conrad Garris of Spearsville. Mr. Garris began his career as a licensed embalmer and funeral director and maintained his licenses until his death. He later worked for the Advance Drug Store in Hodge and eventually went to work for Southern Advance Bag and Paper which became Continental Can and ultimately Smurfit-Stone from which he retired in 1992. He also served 12 years on the Jackson Parish Police Jury. Services are under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home, Jonesboro, Louisiana. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home with services conducted by Rev. Wayne Morrow Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Edmonds Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Jonesboro Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sue Hay Garris, daughter Jerri G. Gleason of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and son Steven R. Garris and wife Raquel of The Woodlands, Texas. Additional survivors include his grandsons Matt Gleason and wife Melissa of Baliston Lake, New York, Marc Gleason of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Ryan Garris of Houston, Texas; great grand-daughter Bree Gleason of Baliston Lake, New York, great grandsons Jaden Gleason of Baliston Lake, New York, and Silas Gleason of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and brothers Conrad C. Garris, and wife Liz, of Farmerville, Louisiana, and DeVayne Garris, and wife Frances, of Spearsville, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Susan Garris and grand-daughter Susan Alaina Garris. Pallbearers will be Matt Gleason, Marc Gleason, Ryan Garris, Richard Townley, Corbett Best, and Domingo Nuno. Memorial donations may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, 7200 Desiard Street, Monroe. Louisiana, 71203-3954.
