Mrs. Gewin was a ongtime resident of Collinston, Louisiana, and an active member of Loch Arbor Baptist Church of Swartz, where she taught Sunday School for 25 years. She had a deep love for children and it is said she never met a child she didn't love! This was reflected in the care and concern she showed for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and the children of her friends whom she "adopted" as her own. When Mr. Johns died, leaving her with two small children, Mrs Gewin worked as a waitress to support her family. Later she met and married Mr. Gewin. She was an accomplished seamstress; a talent that allowed her to have her own business after all the children were in school. In 2004, she moved to Monroe where she was a member of North Monroe Baptist Church and the Winsome Sunday School Class. She was an avid reader. For years there was not a book in the Collinston Library that did not have her name on the check-out card. Mrs. Gewin was happiest when working in her garden, and her love for God's creation was evident in her gardening skills. Bird watching was another favorite pastime. When not working in the garden, she could be found playing cards with her longtime friends. The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the physicians and staff of St. Frances Medical Center, St. Frances Medical Center North, and LSU Medical Sciences Center and to all their friends and family for the love, care, encouragement and support during Mrs. Gewin's long illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, 7200 DeSiard Street, Monroe, La. 71203 or the Building Fund, North Monroe Baptist Church, 210 Fink's Hideaway Rd., Monroe, La. 71203.
