Tuesday March 29, 2016 at Primitive Baptist Church in West Monroe with Rev. W.C. (Dub) Hatten officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rose Cemetery in Grayson, LA. Mary Alice Douglas Gilbert, daughter of Lonnie and Ethel Douglas was born on January 29, 1927 in Grayson, LA and went to her heavenly home to be with cherished loved ones on Saturday, March 26, 2016 in West Monroe, LA surrounded by her loving family. On September 18, 1948, Mary Alice married a handsome sailor, George Washington Gilbert, Jr. Being the wife of a career Navy man, she moved around the United States quite frequently, raising five children as a full time homemaker. Once he retired, they made West Monroe their permanent home being closer to her beloved family. She loved to sew and quilt, making most of her girls' clothing, even 2 wedding dresses and numerous bridesmaids' dresses. She bowled on two different leagues and later participated in Senior Olympics where she medaled in bowling and washer throwing. She loved to shop and to wear pretty clothes. She was a beautiful woman both inside and out. She loved her family and being with them. Mary Alice tried to be at every big event in her thirteen grandchildren's lives. She has always been a fighter being a breast cancer survivor for nearly twenty years. She was a kind spirited woman of Faith and loved her little country church where she grew up, Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church in Grayson which she attended until the preacher retired. She joined WM Primitive Baptist Church in West Monroe and found a whole new family that welcomed her with loving arms. She was a true blessing to her family and was a devoted mother, Nana, sister, Aunt and cousin to many loved ones. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Albert J. and Alfred B. Douglas; the love of her life, her husband of 45 years, George Gilbert; and her precious oldest daughter, Janice Gilbert Fletcher. She is survived by her loving children: Son and daughter-in-law: Ron and Vicki Gilbert of West Monroe; Daughters and sons-in-laws: Barbara and Donnie Hulderson of West Monroe; Lisa and Glenn Hummel of Monroe; Teresa and Bobby Howard of West Monroe. Grandchildren: Grandsons and granddaughters-in-law : Jeff and Katherine Gilbert, Jamie and Sandy Gilbert, Doug and Teresa Fletcher, Josh and Ashley Bagwell, Caleb and Savannah Bagwell, Forrest and Nali Hummel, Brooks and Courtney Hummel and Jesse Martin. Granddaughters and grandsons-in-law: Crystal Fletcher and Michael Cromwell, Kacey Bagwell and Jonathan Read, Hannah Martin and Kurt Mayes, Sarah Hummel and Nick Gregory and Alexandra Hummel; Eighteen great grandchildren: Sister, Gloria Jean Douglas Hendrix; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be her grandsons with her granddaughters and granddaughters- in-law as her honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Monday March 28, 2016 at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe. The family would like to express their appreciation to the Savannah Grand Staff and Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care for the loving care and compassion they showed to our precious mother and grandmother.
