James Herbert Gilbert, 70, formerly of Crossett, AR died March 21, 2010, at the Northeast Louisiana War Veteran's Home in Monroe, LA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Homes of Monroe on Lamy Lane with Rev. Oda (Tuck) Roberts and Rev. Mark Fenn officiating. James was born August 9, 1939, on the banks of Bear Lake to Jean H. and Lucille Deckard Gilbert. Upon graduating from West Monroe High School in 1957, James joined the United States Army wanting to follow in his brother Ralph's footsteps and become a paratrooper. He served in Korea and Okinawa. While in the military, he had the privilege of marching in President John F. Kennedy's Inauguration Parade. He was also part of the 82nd Airborne Division prepared to parachute into Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, but spent most of his time in B Co 2-503rd as part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He served in the military from 1960-1963. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, James was a member of Riverview Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school, RA's, and led the singing. While working part time and attending Northeast Louisiana University, he met Lyndae Ann Johnson and they were married July 17, 1964. James and Lyndae transferred to Louisiana Tech University for James to pursue his degree in forestry. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. Upon graduation in 1967, he was hired by Georgia-Pacific in Crossett, Arkansas, as an Assistant Forester on the Crossett District. He served as District Forester for Berlin District and Crossett District. He was then promoted to Area Forester at Beekman, LA and then to Crossett Area Forester, where he remained until his retirement in 2001. While a forester in Louisiana, he had the distinct privilege of serving on the board of directors for the Louisiana Forestry Association. James was known for raising Catahoula cur dogs used in hunting wild hogs. Men from Louisiana and Northern Arkansas traveled to Crossett just to take part in his hog hunting adventures. James was known for his story telling, all of which he said were all true. Besides being an avid horseman, he had the reputation for being one of the best grilling cooks in Ashley County. When guests came to his house for a cookout, he enjoyed surprising them with turtle, rattlesnake, raccoon, or maybe even a beaver. They always enjoyed eating whatever he fed them. James was adored by his grandchildren who enjoyed their Paw Paw's hiking expeditions in the woods around his house, where he showed them the wild vegetation they could and could not eat. He taught them to ride horses as well and to fish from the pond on his land. They especially enjoyed eating fruit from the trees he had planted, particularly the persimmons. He was even known to climb the tree in order to get the ripe ones for the grandkids. James was a Christian family man who spent time working at his church as choir director for North Crossett First Baptist Church, and later Temple Baptist Church. He served as deacon for Temple Baptist and First Baptist Church of Crossett. He participated in two mission trips to Brazil, two to Mexico and one to South Texas. James was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Lucille Marie Deckard Gilbert, sisters Annette Gilbert and Betty Calhoun; his brothers, Ralph and Raymond Woodall, and a nephew, Tony Brantley. James is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lyndae, two daughters; Ann (Mark) Fenn of West Monroe, LA, and Susan (John) Mitchell of Monroe, LA; and son, Stephen Gilbert of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Caleb Fenn, Cole Thomas, Evan Thomas, Max Mitchell and Hannan Marie Mitchell. James is also survived by a brother, Henry (Vickie) Gilbert of Strong, AR; sisters Ruth (Lamar) Brantley of Downsville, LA, Peggy Gilbert of Springfield, MO, and Dorothy Gilbert of Baton Rouge, LA., a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are nephews Charles Woodall, Robert Woodall, Jason Bennett, Mark Bennett, Larry Brantley and Barry Brantley. Honorary pallbearers are Kenneth Calhoun, Richard Calhoun, and Michael Calhoun. James will be missed by his family and friends, but we will be together again one day where there will be no sickness or tears. James was a man of great moral character and a Christian example to those around him. His exemplary life will be remembered by all. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 23, 2010, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and from 1:00 PM until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. A heartfelt thank you to the staff, nurses, and CNA's who cared for James this past year and especially this past week.
