MARTHA ANN LOUGHRIDGE GILCHRIST


Graveside services for Martha Ann Loughridge Gilchrist, 76, of Monroe, will be 
held at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 11, 2013 at Church of The Redeemer in Oak 
Ridge, LA with The Very Reverend Whit Stodghill officiating, under the 
direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe.

Martha Ann was born on March 10, 1936. She passed away on February 8, 2013, at 
the age of 76 after a long battle with lung cancer.

Martha Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Leland and Mildred 
Loughridge; and her grandparents, with whom she shared a special relationship, 
Marvin and Minnie Irma Limerick.

Martha Ann was a highly gifted craftswoman of her time. She won numerous 
awards for her innovative jewelry designs, including the 1970 Linz Brothers 
award and the 1975 Diamonds International Award for her signature piece, "The 
Pomegranate", now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian 
Institute. Other jewelry creations by Mrs. Gilchrist are parts of collections 
at the Carnegie Museum and Los Angeles County Museum, respectively. Her work 
was highly respected by other jewelers of her time; at one of her regular 
gemology seminars at Paris Texas College, all three honored guest speakers 
were wearing her pieces. The 1980 Lapidary Journal praised her contribution to 
those who are interested in gems and minerals, stating "she has demonstrated 
that there is no limit as to where devotion to these masterpieces of nature 
will lead."

In addition to a brilliant jeweler, she was a devoted mother, grandmother, and 
wife. She was immensely supportive of her family, frequently keeping up with 
their lives and their accomplishments, and was always the first to check up on 
her friends and loved ones. She was very involved with St. Mark's School of 
Texas and Episcopal School of Dallas, where her children attended, and was an 
active member of Oak Ridge's Church of the Redeemer.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John; sister, Mildred Lynn 
Loughridge Kovac and husband Ken Kovac; brother, Rush Loughridge; her 
children, John Gilchrist, Jr. and his wife, Amy, and Tina Gilchrist Miller and 
her husband, Rick Miller; her niece, Anna Claire Kovac Herndon; and her 
grandchildren, Caitlin, Chase, and Victoria. She will be greatly missed by all 
who loved her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Cancer 
Society, or a charity of your choice.
