She grew up on family farms in east Texas, working alongside her six brothers. She married Robert Maclin Gill June 5, 1937 in Mineola, Texas. She traveled with her husband across the South while he worked constructing gas pipelines. Arlene lived at the Clark's Booster Station from 1942 until 1958 when she and her family moved to Fairbanks, LA. She was a wonderful homemaker, children's Sunday school teacher, and active member in Clarks Baptist Church and Fairbanks Baptist Church WMU most of her life. Nieces, nephews, neighborhood children, and later their children loved to visit Mrs. Gill's home for fun and games. She loved to entertain, sometimes taking on the persona of Minnie Pearl or Phyllis Diller. Arlene loved to make people laugh. She was a doting grandmother and great-grandmother (GiGi). Having family "get-togethers" with much reminiscing about the "good Old Days" was especially enjoyed. Her "green thumb" provided beautiful flowers, fruit trees, and vegetables galore, which she loved to share. Arlene was always offering kindness, encouraging words, and helpful hands. She was known for her long, newsy, funny letters to relatives and friends. She passed away May 4, 2014 after a short illness at 97 years of age. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 60 years, six brothers, and one sister. Arlene is survived by her son Col. Robert Louis Gill and wife Janis Parker Gill of Montgomery, Texas, her daughter Brenda Gill Riggin, and husband Harold R. Riggin of Fairbanks, Louisiana, her granddaughter Jana Paige Gill Jackson and husband Ron Jackson of Montgomery, Texas, her great granddaughter Jordan Nicole Jackson of Montgomery, Texas, sister-in-law Janette McRae of Irving, Texas, and brother-in-law Sye Garrett of Mesquite, Texas The family would like to thank her caregivers, Denise Powell, Linda Thomas, Marye Thomas, and Patricia Lightsey. Their tender, devoted care spoiled our mama. Our thanks are extended to the staff at Glenwood Hospital, Cornerstone Hospital, Avalon Place, and Gamble Hospice.
