The funeral service, led by the Rev. Roy B. Moore will follow the visitation and will begin at 2:00 pm, followed by burial in the Bear Creek Cemetery. Joan Gleason was born on September 30, 1936 in Bear Creek, LA and went to be with her Lord on June 15, 2017 at the age of 80 after a very long illness. Joan grew up in Bear Creek and graduated from Bryceland High School where she was a star basketball player. She enrolled in and graduated from Louisiana Tech with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Home Economics and would later receive her Masters of Education degree from Louisiana Tech as well. Her first job upon graduating Tech in 1958 was being a home economist for United Gas where she gave cooking demonstrations. It was there she met her future husband Ben Gleason while both were on assignment in Monroe, LA. After marrying in 1958 they moved to Shreveport, LA and after beginning a family, Joan became a Home Economics Teacher where she taught students the joy of cooking. She began her teaching career at St. Vincent's Academy, then on to Bethune Jr. High School and finally teaching at C.E. Byrd High School where she retired from teaching. Joan along with her husband Ben were tree farmers with three different timber producing tracts in two parishes. In 1996 Joan and Ben were chosen Tree Farmers of the Year by the Louisiana Tree Farmer Association. Joan was a sharp business woman handling the family's timber and natural gas holdings. In her free time she was an avid fisherwoman. She loved to fish and did so until her health would not allow her to do so. Joan loved her children and grandchildren. She instilled in all of them the love of family and the joy of cooking. Each time the family gathered she made sure to get the children and the grandchildren involved in the cooking. During the Christmas holidays she would host the grandchildren baking day where she taught them to prepare from scratch their chosen delicacy. Joan along with her husband Ben were charter members of Christ United Methodist Church in Shreveport, LA and became members of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church when moving to live on Lake Claiborne in late 1990's. Joan loved to garden, whether it was cultivating fruit trees and bushes or growing beautiful flowers; she definitely had a green thumb. Even until her last week of life she was cultivating Hydrangeas to share with others. Joan was a devoted wife, a great mother, a loving grandmother, a caring neighbor, an awesome cook, a terrific teacher and a beautiful child of a loving and gracious God! The best part of Joan Loe Gleason lives in each person she touched, taught and blessed through the love that God shared through her. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Benjamin D. Gleason Jr., her parents, Foster and Mary Loe, her brothers Fred L. Loe and James L. Loe, and her grandson Benjamin A. Gleason. She is survived by her daughter Cindy Gleason Johnson and husband Neil Johnson of Shreveport; sons Steve Gleason and wife Libby Gleason of West Monroe; Danny Gleason and Beth Gleason of Destrehan; grandchildren: Sarah Corzine, Mary Gleason, Andrew Gleason, Matthew Gleason, Bradford Johnson, and Hannah Johnson; her very devoted caregiver Denise Dew; her sister Mary Nell White and husband L.E. White; her sister in law Robbie Loe; her sister in law Mary Gleason; and numerous nephews and nieces. Pallbearers: Andrew Gleason, Kane Finkbeiner, Lee Finkbeiner, Kyle Barefield, Ken Barefield, and Bob Gleason. Honorary Pallbearers: Matthew Gleason, Gary Smith and Robert Washington. The family would like to thank the gracious medical staff of Willis-Knighton Bossier ICU. You were a blessing to Joan and her family during a very fragile time. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be sent to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 3647 LA Hwy 146, Homer, LA 71040.
