BETTY ORMOND GRAY

Betty Ormond Gray, 96, passed away peacefully August 16, 2014. A visitation with 
friends and family will be held at Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Monroe, 6:00 PM to 
8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 with graveside services Thursday at 10:00 
AM at Mulhearn Memorial Park.

Betty was born May 29, 1918 and raised in Forest, MS. She graduated from Newcomb 
College of Tulane University in 1939 and was inducted into Mortar Board. She 
married Dr. C. Prentice Gray, Jr., and, after WW II, they returned to Monroe. 
She resided in Monroe at 1200 Fairview from 1946 until early this year when her 
health declined, and she was moved to a care home near her elder son, Courtland 
Gray and his wife Pat in Plano, TX.

Betty was active in many organizations in Monroe, including the Ouachita Parish 
Medical Auxiliary; The Book Club; The Review Club; Monroe Junior Charity League, 
now Monroe Junior League; Monroe Symphony League; Monroe Garden Study League; 
Monroe Garden Club; DAR; Phi Mu Fraternity; and was a Cub Scout den mother.

She was a very active and supportive member of the First United Methodist Church 
for over 70 years, and she raised her children to be committed to their faith.

She loved her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, serving her 
delicious mint sherbet whenever they came to visit. She was a gracious southern 
lady and excellent hostess and cook. She particularly enjoyed hosting her bridge 
groups.

She and Prentice travelled extensively abroad, including a memorable trip aboard 
the last voyage of the HMS Queen Elizabeth in 1968. They later sailed on the new 
Queen Elizabeth II. They completed a rigorous around the world trip, stopping in 
Honolulu, Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Athens, and Lisbon before 
returning home. After Prentice passed away in 1991, Betty continued to travel, 
including a Danube River cruise from Germany to Hungary. As an avid sports, and 
particularly baseball, fan, her two trips to Wrigley Field in Chicago to see her 
beloved Cubs play were especially memorable.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dr. C. Prentice Gray, Jr 
and their beloved daughter, Louise Gray Altick and husband James A. Altick; 
great grandson James A. "Trey" Altick III; and three older brothers, Robert, 
Seaborn, and Oliver.

Betty is survived by her son Courtland Gray III and wife Pat Wallace Gray, son 
Woods Eastland Gray and wife Mary Bass Gray, grandchildren Courtland Gray IV, 
Dr. James A. Altick, Jr. and wife Helena, Ormond Altick Guenard and husband Jay, 
Connie Altick Banovac and husband Filip, LTC Robert Eastland Gray and wife 
Jessica, Michael Woods Gray and wife Carla, Andrew Bass Gray and wife Stephanie, 
sister-in-law Maybeth Mitchell Ormond, and 16 great grandchildren.

The family would like to express its thanks and gratitude to the caretakers who 
faithfully attended Betty for the past three years as her health declined. These 
include Brenda Woods, Rose McCartny, Anna Goodjoint, and Alberta Norsworthy in 
Monroe; and J J at Teresa's Care Home in Allen, TX. Amity Hospice Care, Dallas, 
TX tended to Betty in her final days.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Trey Altick Foundation or a
charity of choice
