PATRICIA JOAN SMITH GREGG

Mrs. Patricia Joan "Honey" Gregg (Smith) passed away on July 5, 2015 in 
Kirkland, Washington at the age of 86, after a fierce battle with cancer.

Joan was born on March 13, 1929 in Tallulah, Louisiana to Henry George and 
Ethel Ruth Smith. She graduated from Tallulah High School and attended 
Northeast Louisiana College in Monroe, Louisiana, where she met and married the 
love of her life, Jerry Gregg in 1949. Joan and Jerry raised their three 
children in Sterlington where she was involved in everything Jerry and the 
children did. An accomplished seamstress, Joan worked late many nights sewing 
and crafting piano frocks, cheerleader uniforms, prom dresses and specialized 
items for school and church functions. She was quite a poet and could always be 
depended on for some catchy slogans for school banners, cheers and holiday 
programs. Most important were the personalized remarks she slipped into her 
letters and cards for those she loved. Her great grandchildren still giggle as 
they repeat some of her more outrageous expressions. Not even remotely 
interested in any sport on land or water, unless it was a heated game of 
bridge, SkipBo, a board game or fishing, Joan did her best to never miss a 
football, basketball, track or swim meet in which her children were involved. 
Her children remember her as a kind, giving mother who set a very high bar on 
education and encouraged them to reach for the stars. However, everyone always 
minded their manners. Joan was an accomplished cook and excelled at showing her 
love with home cooking for the sick. Joan was a one woman "Meal on Wheels" who 
provided comfort to those who were ill or shut in. She set a beautiful table 
and there are many across the nation who still beg for her cheese straws and 
salted pecans. She will be remembered as a lively woman who loved to dance, 
play cards and fish, all the while stylishly dressed. She possessed a 
remarkable memory, family history being high on the list, and occasionally 
enjoyed a little "boo boo water". After moving to Monroe in 1968, Joan began 
working for Dr. Fred Sartor in 1973 as an insurance specialist and later worked 
at North Monroe Hospital in the same capacity until she retired. Joan was a 
member of First Presbyterian Church and Women of the Church, a sustaining 
member of Monroe Junior League and past President of PEO Chapter AK.

Joan is survived by her 3 children, Honorable Marjorie Ruth Gregg of Seattle; 
Washington, Jerry Baird Gregg, Jr. and wife, Sally of Redmond, Washington; John 
Harvey Gregg and wife, Melody of Sterlington, Louisiana; 7 Grandchildren; 13 
Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, 
cousins and a multitude of dear friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Baird Gregg of Sterlington, 
Louisiana; brothers John Charles Smith of Tallulah, Louisiana; Brax Edward 
Smith of St. Louis, Missouri: Henry George (Smitty) Smith of St. Louis, 
Missouri; and sister Ruth Elisabeth Qualls of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
