SNAPP GUELZOW Funeral services for Sallie R. Snapp Guelzow, 96, of Monroe, will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum chapel with Dr. Allison Moody officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.Sallie Knox Reed Snapp Guelzow was born to Sallie Knox and Andrew Jackson Reed on July 20, 1917 and left this life for her heavenly mansion on August 7, 2013.Sallie was preceded in death by her mother, Sallie Knox; her father, Andrew Jackson Reed, Sr.; brother, Andrew Jackson Reed, Jr.; and husbands, M.L. Snapp and Richard Guelzow.Born in McDowell, Alabama and reared in Demopolis, Alabama, Sallie spent her childhood years on her father's cotton farm, and learned to swim by jumping off the ferry on the Tombigbee River! She attended Catholic school in Union Town, Alabama, and rode the train with her brother every day back and forth to school. Her high school years were spent in Panama City, Florida with her Aunt, Uncle, and double first cousin. Sallie was quite a spirited teenager for her day, and was in the principal's office often for smoking cigarettes and defying authority in general, two pastimes which she would continue to enjoy for most of her adult life! In 1932 she graduated from St. Margaret's School of Nursing in Montgomery, Alabama with a Registered Nursing degree. Upon graduating, she moved to Alexandria, Louisiana to work at the Veteran's Administration Hospital. In Alexandria she met and married her favorite bowling and fishing partner, Manco Lee Snapp, and in 1944 moved to Monroe where she and M.L. had two children and enjoyed 40 happy years together on North Third Street! Several years after M.L. passed away, Sallie married her best friend and neighbor, Richard Guelzow. Richard and Sallie had a wonderful three years together traveling the globe and visiting friends and family all over the United States until his death in 1989.Sallie worked as a nurse for a great deal of her life. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Bank in Monroe for many years, and then was employed by the state of Louisiana as a Public Health nurse at the Ouachita Parish Health Unit in Monroe. Many people still remember her giving shots at the elementary schools in Monroe and making home visits when new babies were born! All who knew Sallie would agree that her biggest contribution to this life was Service. Throughout her lifetime, she always made time to visit the sick, the housebound, or anyone who needed a little cheering up. The Church was very important to Sallie, and if the doors of the First Presbyterian Church were open, Sallie could be found serving as Elder or Deacon, traveling with a Search Committee, polishing the Holy Communion service or trying to tell the minister how he should be running God's business!Raised on the bayous and bays of the Gulf South, Sallie was an avid fisherwoman, who was known to shed her shirt as the day got warmer on the boat. At her home on Phillips Bayou, she and Richard always kept cane poles, worms, and crickets waiting for her grandchildren or anyone who might have a hankering to fish. She is probably fishing right now with her brother, Jack, and her double first cousin, Minge, inside the Pearly Gates! She loved practical jokes, the many dogs in her life, and dancing - many friends remember Sallie (well into her eighties) performing the "gator" at both her granddaughters' weddings!Sallie is survived by her son, Manco Lee Snapp, Jr. (Sandy); daughter, Lala Snapp Funderburg (Morris); step son, Kurt Guelzow (Maureen); step daughter, Gretchen Guelzow Rosen (Ira); grandson, Travis Snapp; granddaughters, Sallie Knox Funderburg Hall (Ben) and Kattie Funderburg Hughes (Heath); great-grandchildren, Weatherly Hall, Bowman Hall, Pruitt Hughes, Drake Hughes; and many other family members, nieces and nephews.During the last four years of her life, Sallie loved and was loved and cared for by the wonderful staff at The Terrace who truly became family. Many of the nurses affectionately called her "The Queen of the Terrace" and she was known to affectionately call them "Jackass," a term those of us who knew her well heard many times! Many thanks to the nurses at The Terrace and the nurses with Louisiana Hospice for providing our Mama with much love and support during her last years.
