Monroe with Rev. William Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Ronald Gunter was born June 16, 1930 and passed away April 2, 2017. He was predeceased by his parents, George Gunter and Maude Gunter (Cupples), his sister, Vergie Hobbs, his first wife, Sylvia Lee Gunter, and his son, Jerry Gunter. Ronald is survived by his second wife, Audrey Phelps Gunter, his brother, Jackie Gunter, his sister, Carolyn Holzclaw, his son, Carl Gunter, his step son, Louis Web Phelps, his grandchildren, Virginia Miller, Rebecca McWilliams, George Gunter, Richard Gunter, and great-grandchildren, Matthew and Sam Miller. Ronald Gunter lived an active, athletic life. He played football at Neville High School and from there won a football scholarship to Northeast Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana at Monroe). Following college, he served in the Army in France and Germany, following the Second World War. Ronald returned to the Monroe area where he married Sylvia Lee Gunter from Bastrop in 1956. Ronald and Sylvia had two sons, Carl and Jerry, and lived most of their married life in Monroe. Ronald was the purchasing agent for Northeast Louisiana University for many years, before retiring in 1995. After the death of Silvia Lee, he married his former Neville High School sweetheart Audrey Phelps. Ronald was an avid golfer and loved his many friends in the area. In his later years, his membership at Bayou Desiard Country Club and Monroe Athletic Club gave him a strong sense of community. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 8:00PM, Wednesday, at Mulhearn Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Carl Gunter, George Gunter, Richard Gunter, Web Phelps, and Robert Holzclaw. Memorials may be made to Alzheimers research.
