He departed this life on Friday, June 21, 2013, after a lengthy illness. Eight siblings and five of his own children preceded him in death. At an early age, he joined Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in West Monroe. He completed the 11th grade at the old Mineral Springs School before starting to work to assist the family. Then he united in marriage on July 28, 1945 with the late Mert Wilks Hanspard. They were blessed with ten children. Some of his jobs and achievements include: working with Illinois Central Railroad; being self-employed-hauling wood; working for a short period with West Feed Mill; working for and becoming supervisor at the La Highway Department of Transportation. His religious achievements include: teaching Sunday School Class #3 at Mt. Pleasant and being crowned as deacon before being called into the ministry under the administration of Rev. F. D. Nash. As a young pastor, he was a dedicated member of the Northern La Old Line Baptist Association where he served first as vice president, then as treasure until his death. He attended the United Theological Seminary in Monroe. He was faithful in the attending the National Convention and local Theological Seminary in Monroe. His attendance was faithful with the National Convention and local associations because he was always willing to learn. God blessed him to serve as one of the Sons of the House at Mt. Pleasant in West Monroe. He also pastured at St. Paul in Ward 9 and served 28 years as pastor of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in West Monroe until he retired on June 30, 2012. He leaves to cherish, one son- Rev. Terry Hanspard of Long Beach, Ca; four daughters- Rev. Liller (Richard) Lawrence, Rev. Bertha Franklin, Evangelist Mert Denise McIntyre, and Rev. Johnnie Kay Hanspard, all of Monroe, La.; four sisters- Elaine Taylor of Calhoun, La., Lena (Superintendant Billy) Caldwell of Monroe, La., Jessie Mae Stevenson of New Jersey and Carrie Jean (George) Stedman of Merrillville, In.; two brothers- Elder Joe Corprue of West Monroe and Robert Lee (Rosa) Corprue of Calhoun, La.; one brother-in-law - Elton (Bettie) Wilks of Arcadia, La.; two sisters-in-law, Clara (Jerry) Toston and Ruth Wilks of Ruston, La.; 18 grand children, 41 great grand children, 9 great great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
