HAYNES L. JR. HARKEY

Funeral services for Haynes L. Harkey, Jr., 93 of Monroe, will be held at 3:00 
PM at First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 with Rev. J. 
Roddy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Old Monroe City Cemetery, 
under direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

Haynes was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Lake Providence, LA, to Haynes Louis Harkey, 
Sr. and Allein Wood Harkey. Following graduation from Louisiana Tech, Haynes 
began law school at Tulane University. His law school education was 
interrupted by World War II. Haynes entered the Navy where he served for 3 
years. Upon completion of law school, he moved to Monroe where he began his 
practice of law and was one of the two original founders of Hayes, Harkey, 
Smith & Cascio, L.L.P. Haynes served for 17 years as the city attorney of 
Monroe. Among other achievements in the legal profession, Haynes served as the 
president of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel. In 1949, Haynes 
joined First United Methodist Church where he remained a faithful and active 
member until his death. He was part of the teaching team of his beloved Sunday 
School class, the Aldersgate class, for more than 50 years; served as Chairman 
of the Board of Trustees, as well as Chairman of the building committee that 
built the present sanctuary on Loop Road. Haynes had many interests, including 
his longtime hobby of photography, teaching himself to develop and print his 
own work. He was a member of and an officer in the North Louisiana Camera Club 
for which he wrote the club newsletter for many years. Over the years he was 
active on several boards and missions at ULM. Haynes was a supporter of the 
Boy Scouts of America, having been a boy scout himself and raising his two 
sons in scouting. One of his proudest moments was seeing a grandson achieve 
the Eagle Scout Rank, the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouts, making him a 
3rd-generation Harkey Eagle Scout. Haynes and his wife were long-time members 
of the Bayou Desiard Country Club, where he served as president and enjoyed 
many years of golfing and social activities. Over and above all of Haynes's 
achievements, interests and affiliations, he will best be remembered by his 
loved ones as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He 
dearly loved and was so proud of his family.

Mr. Harkey died April 11, 2014, at St. Catherine's Village, Madison, MS.

Mr. Harkey was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Faulk Harkey 
and brother, Gilbert Harkey of Shreveport, LA.

Survivors include his three children, Virginia Harkey Youngblood and husband 
Gerald of Austin, TX; Louis Harkey and wife Alison; Matt Harkey and wife 
Robin, all of Jackson, MS; ten grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sister 
Allein Harkey Watson and husband Philip Watson of St. Joseph, LA; and sister-
in-law, Peggy Harkey of Shreveport, LA.

Pallbearers will be Thomas M. Hayes, III, John B. Saye, Wayne Meece, John 
Yount, Herschel Gentry, Bill Kelly, David Stith, and Ed McGuire. Honorary 
pallbearers will be the ROMEO luncheon club.

Visitation will be at 1:00 PM until service time Wednesday at the church.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the wonderful staff at St. 
Catherine's Village, his longtime caretaker Michelle Owens and all the many 
people in his life who loved him and ministered to him in the final months of 
his life.
