HARRIS Funeral services for Betty M. Harris, 92, of Monroe, LA, will be held 9:00 AM, Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Mulhearn's Funeral Home, Sterlington Rd with Rev. Tim Neustifter officiating. Internment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in El Dorado, AR. Mrs. Harris died Saturday, August 23, 2014, at Christus St. Joseph's Nursing Home. She was born August 22, 1922 in El Dorado, AR and graduated from El Dorado High School. She attended Henderson Junior College in Arkadelphia, AR for one year and later graduated from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA in 1948 with a teaching degree. Mrs. Harris moved to Monroe in 1950 and taught first grade at Sherrouse Elementary School for two years before starting a family. She later returned to teaching full time and taught for a number of years in the Monroe City School System, principally the first grade at Minnie Ruffin Elementary School. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and a sustaining member of the Junior League of Monroe. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and PEO. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs in Monroe. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her parents, Edward V. and Lillian Nash Alpuente, and her brother, Edward V. Alpuente, Jr., of El Dorado, and her husband William K. Harris, Sr. and oldest son William K. Harris, Jr. (Billy), of Monroe. Survivors include her son Charles E. Harris and his wife Debi of Fair Haven, NJ, her grandson Chris Harris of Morristown, NJ, her sister Ruiz Anne Kegler and her husband Ted of Fairbanks, AK, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Pallbearers will be Charles Harris, Tom Murray, Edward Albares, and Rob Nash. Honorary pallbearer is Robert Nash. Visitation will be 2:00 until 4:00 PM Wednesday August 27. The family wishes to extend their thanks for the loving care and devotion of Sabrina Smith and the other dedicated caregivers of Senior Care Services in Monroe and to the nurses and staff of Christus St. Joseph's Nursing Home. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Monroe.
