Lynn Malone and Rev. J. Roddy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, under direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Mr. Hayes was a retired insurance adjuster from Commercial Union and passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, at his residence. He was an active and faithful member of First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was also a charter member of College Place Baptist Church. Mr. Hayes graduated from Ouachita Parish High School, attended NLU, and finished his college degree at Louisiana Tech University. He served in the U.S. Army Corps during World War II where he served under General Patton. He stormed the beach of Normandy on the third day and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He served his country as an antiaircraft gunner. In the Black Forest of Germany, he also saw some of the first camouflaged German jets. His service in the army took him to Holland, Belgium, England, Germany, and France. At the end of the war, he was posted in Brussels, Belgium. He loved to watch the ULM Warhawks' games. Mr. Hayes was also an avid fisherman. He "Lived to Fish and Fished to Live." Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his parents, M.P. and Elizabeth Hayes; and son, Michael Hayes. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Margaret Hayes of Monroe, LA; son, Scott Hayes and wife Robin of Conway, AR; granddaughter, Jacqueline Rowe and husband Ryan of West Monroe, LA; great grandsons, Colin and Braylon Rowe of West Monroe, LA; and sister-in-law, Linda Bemis and husband Edward of Olathe, KS. Pallbearers will be Jim Wilson, Frank Adams, James Wooldridge, David Knickerbocker, Wayne Meece, and Donnie Baker. Honorary pallbearers will be the First United Methodist Church Men's Bible Class. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Sunday, January 12, 2014, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.
