HAZEL Funeral services for Col. Gene C. Hazel, 85, of Shreveport, LA formerly of West Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 30, 2015 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe with Dr. Tom Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA. Col. Hazel was born February 25, 1930 and passed away March 26, 2015. After playing football for his Red Wolves (formerly Indians), he graduated from Arkansas State University and continued to be a sports enthusiast. He had an exemplary 33-year military career which included service in the Korean War, numerous medals and commendations, and retirement as a Colonel of the Army National Guard. He was a former president of the LA Wild Turkey Federation, an avid outdoorsman, hunter and golfer. As a long time member of First Baptist West Monroe, he was a faithful Christian man who loved his family dearly. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Mary Roberts Hazel; sons, George Stephen Hazel, Gene Jeffrey Hazel, Robert Mark Hazel and wife Fran, and Lowell Christopher Hazel and wife Karen; daughter, Charlotte Louise Hazel Jenkins and husband Charles; stepchildren, Stephen Howard Rugg and wife Pat,and Susan Rugg Austin and husband David; 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Gabe Downey, Jim Rabb, David Austin, Edward Jenkins, Sims Hazel, and Casey Austin. Honorary Pallbearers will be Taulbee Hazel, Tapp Hazel, Maddox Hazel, Brik Hazel, and Ben Jenkins. Visitation will be held on Monday from 1:00 P.M. until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice .
