Tommy Dean was born May 23, 1931 in Monroe, Louisiana to Margaret Jeffress Callaway and Thomas Dean Callaway, and grew up in Jonesboro. She met her husband of 66 years, Eugene, while attending Jonesboro-Hodge High School. Visitation will be Friday February 21, 2014 at Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston on Saturday February 22, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The funeral service will be held at Trinity at 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 22 officiated by Reverends Robert Daulton and Jerry Hilbun. A graveside service will follow at Jonesboro Cemetery. Tommy Dean was one of those unique individuals, able to very successfully juggle a career outside the home spanning over two decades at Jonesboro State Bank while simultaneously raising a family of four loving daughters. It was only after retiring from the bank that she really went to work, raising over a million dollars for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through her sorority, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, while also administrating the office operations and other managerial aspects of several family owned enterprises. Her philanthropy was not overlooked by others. She was awarded the Lincoln Humanitarian Award by the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the Betty Robbins Volunteer of the Year Award by Ruston Junior Auxiliary and was named ESA Woman of the Year for the entire state of Louisiana. She was also honored on numerous occasions by ALSAC, the fundraising arm of St. Jude Hospital, due to her prolific fundraising activity. Tommy Dean was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Edwin Madison Callaway, two newborn siblings, her surrogate mother Eula Mae Moore and her beloved St. Jude grandchild David Josiah Halbrook. She is survived by her loving husband James Eugene Hearne and her four daughters, Margaret Anna Myers (Kevin) of Athens, Patricia Lynn Willis (Glenn T.), Mary Elizabeth Halbrook (Andy) and Eugenea Louise Howard (Kevin) all of Ruston. She is also survived by several grandchildren, James Backest, Celeste Backest, Joel Myers (Haley), Ashley Coker, Michele Campanella (Joe), Scot Willis (Rebecca), Madison Halbrook, Andrew Halbrook (Amber), Katie Howard, Peyton Howard and Peter Howard. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren, J.B. Backest, Jack, Ella and Kate Willis, Finley Coker, Alexandra and Vince Campanella and Brycen Myers. Pallbearers will be James Backest, Joe Campanella, Scot Willis, Andrew Halbrook, D.J. Allen and Roy Earl Koonce. The family would like thank Trinity United Methodist Church, Robert and Margaret Daulton and their church family at The Gospel, Inc., long-time friend Linda Boyd, Dr. Rodney Reeves and the Critical Care Unit staff at Willis Knighton North in Shreveport, all of the ESA sisters and other friends, family and loved ones for their care, compassion, love and prayers during this time.
