One-third of the ship's crew perished when the ship went down with him being one of the few survivors. This was the last US Navy aircraft carrier to be lost during World War II. He was a resident of Monroe and was a retired employee of Cooper Buick. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. He was proceeded in death by his mother Emelda Trahan Hebert and father Oscar Hebert, brothers Dr. Thomas Hebert, Norris Hebert and a sister Bennette Dugas. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Paula Hebert of Monroe; two sons, Robert A. Hebert (Gail) of Youngsville, La and William "Bill" Hebert (Christine) of Lafayette, La; one daughter, Michelle Large (David) of Iowa; one brother, Joseph Hebert (Jane) of Maurice, La; one sister, Ruby Castillo (Tommy) of San Antonio, TX; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of friends and extended family.
