A long-time Monroe resident, Norma passed away September 4, 2015 in Clinton, Mississippi, and was interred at Big Level Baptist Church in Perkinston, Mississippi. Norma was born June 26, 1924 in Richmond, Indiana, the only child of Herschel and Rachel Mettert. She grew up in Hagerstown, Indiana, where her early years were filled with the study of piano and voice. Norma was valedictorian of the 1942 class at Hagerstown High School and went on to earn a degree in voice from Indiana University. During her college years, Norma appeared as soprano soloist in performances ranging from opera to her own weekly radio program. After graduation, Norma continued her vocal studies at the Chicago Conservatory. In 1947, Norma traveled from Chicago to southern Mississippi to teach music at Perkinston Junior College. It was there that she met and married Nollie Wade Hickman, whose university teaching career brought them to Monroe in 1959 with their young family. Norma's love of music and support for the arts continued throughout her life and led to many deep and long-lasting friendships. For many years, Norma served as Chairperson of the Monroe Symphony League Book Fair, spending countless hours coordinating the volunteers and operations of this major fundraising effort. A lifelong church choir singer, she served faithfully in the choirs at Parkview Baptist Church and Northminister Church where she was proud to be a charter member. Those who sang alongside her grew to appreciate her commitment to both the highest standards of musical excellence and rehearsal deportment. Norma was also an avid concert goer, an intrepid traveler, a competent bridge player and a dedicated collector of English lusterware. Norma was preceded in death by husband Dr. Nollie Wade Hickman, a professor of history at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, in 1987. Survivors include her children Wade Hickman (Jackie) of Ferriday, Louisiana, Mary Rogers (Ryan) of Clinton, Mississippi, and Susan Seiter of Grapevine, Texas; grandchildren Ben Rogers (Christie), Maureen Rogers, Laura Rogers and Emily Seiter; and two great-grandchildren Henry and Hugh Rogers. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Norma's memory be made to the Monroe Symphony Orchestra.
