Willie “Shawn” Hunter, Sr., born July 21, 1927, in Corey, Louisiana, transitioned peacefully in Monroe, Louisiana to his heavenly home on December 26, 2024, at the age of 97. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Georgia Bell, and his daughter, Linda Faye, Willie leaves behind five sons and their wives, 24 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, three great-great- grandchildren, and a host of extended nieces, nephews, family, and friends. A man of faith and dedication, Willie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by Rev. J.H. Housley. He served faithfully as a deacon, minister, and pastor. He began his ministry in 1977 and led congregations for over 24 years; at First Pilgrim Baptist Church and Woods Chapel Baptist Church, respectively. A proud World War II veteran, Willie worked 41 years at United Gas and Louisiana Gas Company while managing a janitorial service to support his family. His devotion and allegiance did not go unnoticed as the mayor of the City of Monroe presented him with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Trailblazer Award on January 15, 2020. He was a devoted husband, father, and community leader whose legacy of hard work, faith, and love endures. His memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him. Well done, good and faithful servant. May your whole body and soul rest eternally. The Celebration of Life for Rev. Willie Hunter Sr. is scheduled for Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, located at 2665 Richwood Rd No. 2, Monroe, Louisiana. The intermittent service will take place at the Richwood Memorial Garden, located at 2705 Richwood Road #2, Monroe, LA 71202. Subsequent to the service, a military salute will be rendered.
