He was born in New Orleans, La., on Jan. 31, 1949. John lived most of his life in Louisiana but fell in love with the wild west and moved to Cody more than 10 years ago. While they say, "You can't take the Louisiana out of the boy," Cody truly became home to John due to the deep and lasting friendships he made. John was a loving, generous person and touched many lives in Louisiana and Wyoming. He graduated from Neville High School in Monroe and attended Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. He spent many years in New Orleans and Monroe, working in the wholesale drug business. Upon moving to Cody John began selling real estate while also using his accounting experience to do bookkeeping and payroll for several small businesses. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served as part time bookkeeper for the Bargain Box. But John really didn't care about the money. When recently asked, he simply stated, "I don't think I made a conscious decision to change what I was doing or how I was doing it. I just kind of decided I could be comfortable doing a bunch of different things instead of having a 'real' job. You then open all these little holes where you have time to do, meet and help others." That sums up how John lived his life - spending as much time as possible helping others. He was incredibly handy and was constantly helping others with projects. John was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and for the last three years he did it his way. He hiked mountains, skied, built a canoe and, most of all, gave back to the Cody community by sponsoring advertisements urging men who have never had a PSA test to do so and offering to pay if needed. John's generosity as a person was selfless and genuine. He was a true gentleman and the most honest friend anyone could want. The family thanks the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver and Spirit Mountain Hospice in Cody for their excellent care. They also recognize all of John's close friends who faithfully visited him during the last few weeks, bringing him peace, joy and many good laughs. He is survived by daughters Margaret (Brent) Moses of Monroe and Sandra (Lucian) Codrescu of Austin, Texas, mother Betty B. Jackson and stepmother Kaydell Currie Jackson, both of Monroe, sisters Jenny (Charlie) Moss of Sumter, S.C., Amy Dixon of Denver and Julie Brandt of New Orleans, brothers Woody (Laura) Jackson of Little Rock, Ark., and Tommy (Kelly) Jackson of Monroe, grandchildren Addison and Emma Moses and Marcus, Joshua and Emily Codrescu, many nieces and nephews who enjoyed going to the beach and spending time with him whenever possible, and his beloved dog Satchmo. John was preceded in death by his father Dr. Jack Tom Jackson. A memorial service will be at noon July 25 at Christ Episcopal Church. Visitation immediately following the services will be at La Comida.
