He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Ann Riser James. After meeting at a 6th grade dance, Margaret Ann and Ben fell in love. Their love and care for each other continues to shine brightly. Ben enjoyed sports of all kinds; he was a wonderful athlete and played basketball and football at Ruston High. Throughout his life, Ben participated in sports as a player and avid supporter. Ben's years of coaching church league basketball demonstrated the great joy he found in giving back to his community. He earned his BA from SMU and was awarded the "Distinguished Alumnus" award by age 50. From LSU, Ben received his JD, and from Louisiana Tech he earned an MBA. Ben participated in the ministry of Trinity UMC throughout his life. Ben held many positions of leadership and received many prestigious awards listed as follows: Secretary of Commerce for the State of Louisiana under the administration of Gov. David Treen from 1982-84, Board of Directors - CLECO Corp., Board of Directors - LA Methodist Children's Home, Founder of Cedar Creek School, Co-Founder of LABI, Diamond Award recipient for AMWAY, Vice Pres. of Land Div. and in house attorney of T.L. James and Co., Founder of American Bank, Board of Trustees for SMU, Founder of LPAC, and VP of the LA Forestry Assoc. Remembered by so many as a deeply generous father-figure for his sense of humor and compassionate spirit. Ben is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Ann, who provided tremendous care in his last days, his brother John Tom James, and his children Floyd Benjamin James III, Kathryn James Booth (and husband, Scott), Amy Elizabeth James (and husband, Jay Hogewood), and Al Riser James (and partner, Julian Burt). He was especially proud of his grandchildren: Daniel and Adam James, Jessica Booth Rinaudo, Shannon Booth Furr, and Martha Claire Booth, Chase Lambert and Jesse James, and his 10 great grandchildren. The visitation will be held on Friday, July 3rd from 9-10:45 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the funeral to follow at 11:00 AM under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston, LA. Memorials may be made to the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home and Cedar Creek School of Ruston.
