Lynn Malone officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday at Oak Grove Cemetery, Oak Grove, LA under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA. Dr. Jarrell died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at his home in Monroe, LA. He was born December 12, 1928 in Oak Grove, LA, and moved to Epps when he was eight. His father was the town pharmacist and his grandfather, a family doctor. He was a star basketball player at Epps High School and also played basketball for LA Tech. Dr. Jarrell graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1949 with a B.S. in Biology (minor in Chemistry pre-med) and continued on to the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans where he received his medical degree in 1954. He spent a year at Conway Hospital in Monroe and continued on to Oschner Foundation Clinic and Hospital in New Orleans. He served two years in the U.S. Navy as a physician at Bainbridge Naval Base in Maryland, and in Washington, D.C., and a temporary duty aboard the U.S.S. Shenandoah. After Dr. Jarrell moved to Monroe and started his practice of obstetrician/gynecologist, from 1962-2005, Dr. Jarrell delivered thousands of babies in Monroe at St. Francis Medical Center, Glenwood Regional Medical Center, and LSU-Conway. His love and appreciation of his patients was shown through his work ethics being on call 24/7 working Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays. Dr. Jarrell was a long-time supporter of Poverty Point, the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum, and the Miss Louisiana Pageant. He attended every Miss Louisiana Pageant since 1950 and many Miss American Pageants. He will also be remembered as an avid Tech sports fan and was named Alumnus of the Year in 1975, was named in the 100 Distinguished Alumni at Tech, and was inducted into the Tech Athletics Hall of Fame. He was also the president of the Alumni Association, and a member of the University Foundation of Tech. Among these awards he also was 1982 Tower Medallion recipient and received the 2003 Mother Gertrude Hennessy Humanitarian Award given to him during St. Francis Medical Center's 90-year celebration. Dr. Jarrell was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Guthrie Jarrell and Lucille Lipp Jarrell. Survivors include Joanna Lipp Diboll and Martha Anna Lipp Vining. Pallbearers will be family members. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 7:00PM, Monday, July 17, 2017, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, and 10:00AM until service time Tuesday at the church.
