Karen was born on September 11, 1947, in Mount Pleasant, Texas to Dr. John S. and Frances G. Kennedy. She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and then attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and thereafter graduated with a degree in speech and drama from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. As the proprietor of The Fashion of Ruston for twenty-six years, Karen brought her personal taste to the community. As a long-time resident of Ruston, she was instrumental in the downtown restoration of the city. She was active in her Sunday School class at Trinity United Methodist Church and The Garden Study Club. She was also a member of several book clubs including The Squire Creek Book Club and The Bookies. Karen loved to travel and was an avid book reader. Her love of cooking and gardening was something she loved to share with her family and friends. Karen is preceded in death by her father, Dr. John S. Kennedy, and in-laws Herbert H. Johnson and Ann P. Johnson. She is survived by her husband, James W. Johnson; daughters, Katie Johnson and Jenny Johnson Smart and husband Dale; grandson, Mick Weston Smart; her mother, Frances G. Kennedy; sister, Janet Martin and husband Russell; sister-in-law, Candy Hill; and several nieces and nephews. Special love and heartfelt thanks to Hasson Glasgow for her steadfast and continuous love through the years to the family. Karen's infectious laugh and zest for life will be with us always. Go rest high on that Mountain our precious Karen. A private family burial service will precede the Celebration of Life and Resurrection held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston, Louisiana on Monday June 26, 2017 at 4:00pm under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA. The pallbearers will be Ardis Stuckey, Chastain Wardlaw, Drew Jones, Dud Holland, Joe Glasgow, and Woody Smithey.
