Ella began to thrive academically at an early age; her gifts were encouraged by family, teachers, and the church family of Trenton Baptist Church, West Monroe. Valedictorian of the Richardson High School Class of 1966, Ella left home at 17 to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Northeast Louisiana University. Ella later went on to earn a Master's degree in Chemistry, from Southern University and A & M College, and a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry, from Louisiana State University, both in Baton Rouge, LA. While at LSU, she met and married a Physics Ph.D. student, Diola Bagayoko, from Mali. Together, Dr. Kelley and Dr. Bagayoko joined the faculty of Southern University Baton Rouge in 1984. To their union were born three children; Namory Djigui Bagayoko(Courtney), an orthopedic surgeon; Kelley Elizabeth Bagayoko Adams(Timothy), an attorney, and William Cherif Bagayoko, a computer scientist. She was a devoted and caring mother who invested her time and resources to ensure the success of her children and any child in her reach. Dr. Kelley was also the founding mother and co-director of the Timbuktu Academy (1990-2015). She and Dr. Robert L. Ford received - with the Timbuktu Academy - the US Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (US-PAESMEM) in 2003. During her tenure as a Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Kelley authored over a dozen refereed technical publications in Biochemistry, teaching, mentoring, and learning. Most recently, Dr. Kelley served Southern University Baton Rouge as Dean of the Dolores Richard Spikes Honors College and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Dr. Ella Lee Kelley Bagayoko leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of over 30 years, Dr. Diola Bagayoko; two sons; one daughter; two grandchildren, Ella Araminta Bagayoko and Nawali Djibril Bagayoko; one sister, Margaret Ann Davis of Destrehan, LA; one brother, William Clarence Kelley(JoAnn) of West Monroe, LA; friends who were as close as sisters, Dr. Alma Thornton(Ademola Oloko), Deborah Chatman(Tommy), and Ladeta Crawley; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, god-children, students, mentees, friends, and colleagues. Viewing on Friday, July 17th(1-5pm), Family Hour(4-5pm), and Wake and Reflections(5-7pm) at Hall Davis and Son Funeral Home, 9348 Scenic Hwy. Baton Rouge, LA.
