Known for her loyal friendships, she was an inspiration to those who knew and loved her. Mary lived a soulful, courageous life, taking on critical life changes in pursuit of her own truth while advocating for civil rights, peace, and the rights of women. Mary was born in 1925 in Monroe, Louisiana, daughter of Mary Louise Grisham and Robert Long Kellogg. After her father's death, she became the step-daughter of Thomas Watkins Leigh. She graduated from Ward-Belmont Preparatory School in Nashville, TN, and from Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, LA. She received a Masters Degree in Library Science from University of Oregon. Married to and later divorced from Richard A. Faust, M.D., she lived much of her adult life in New Orleans raising four children. During this time she volunteered at organizations such as Kingsley House and Milton Latter Library. Later she and her sister Rhoda Kellogg Norman founded the Maple Street Book Shop, where she developed friendships with countless customers and pursued her lifelong love of books. A devoted mother, Mary was also a good friend to her children, and a good friend to her children's friends, treating people of all ages with respect and dignity. She had a delightful sense of humor and was a curious and gracious good listener. While living in Eugene, Oregon during the 1970's, she founded the Book and Tea Shop, and like Maple Street Book Shop, it became a de facto community center where books, ideas, and issues of the day were discussed and debated. In 1981 she moved to San Francisco and remained committed to political activism, particularly feminism and the Nuclear Freeze movement. She gave generously to causes she believed in. Survivors include her sister and soulmate Rhoda Kellogg Norman; four children Richard Alan Faust Jr, Rhoda Kellogg Faust, Robert Kellogg Faust, Consuelo Abaunza Faust-Anderson; four grandchildren, Richard Alan Faust III, Robert Moreland Faust, Madeleine Stuart Anderson, and Thea Faust Anderson; and great grandson Hunter Moreland Faust. There will be a gathering to celebrate her life, the plans for which are not yet finalized. Throughout her life Mary's ready smile revealed her compassionate nature. It stayed with her until the end.
