KINNEY Funeral services for Roland Thomas Kinney, Jr., 85, of Monroe, will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 16, 2014, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Dr. Alan Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Kinney passed away Monday, January 13, 2014. He was born March 22, 1928 in Clarks, Louisiana and lived in Grayson until he joined the Army-Air Force during the Korean War. After the war, he attended Northeast Louisiana Junior College, going on to pursue a very successful career as a Real Estate broker, builder, and land developer. Roland began his entrepreneurial career at an early age, marking up candy to sell to the troops being transported for WWII. Successful side ventures include farming, ranching, and everything from fireworks to wallpaper. Roland, known to many as "Papa," "Uncle Junior," and "R.T.," was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe. R.T. was a Mason, serving as Worthy Patron of Louise L. McGuire Chapter 4, Order of the Eastern Star. R.T. took great pride in being a charter member of Barak Shrine, serving as Potentate in 1993. R.T. was a world traveler, but favored the Pacific Northwest and travelling up and down the west coast many times. Simply said, R.T. loved the Lord and he loved his family. R.T. was preceded in death by his father, R.T. Kinney, Sr.; mother, Frankie Kinney; brother, John Kinney; and grandson, Jason Obert. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Betty; his daughter, Ouida; his son, Steve; and step daughter, Alice McKee; sisters, Sue Castle, Louise Gilley and husband Leroy; 5 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, and 6 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Al Drummond, Johnny Mitchell, David Marine, Ian Kinney, Benson Kinney, George Abbott, and David Jett. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
